how safe is it to walk around downtown portland after dark? are there areas to stay away from?

I would say before 8pm is generally safe, but after that your rolling the dice.

Not to say Portland is dangerous, for a city, its pretty safe, and 99% of the time you would be perfectly fine walking anywhere in Portland late at night, but its that 1%. That one night you might run into a drunk or punk looking to start some trouble. Chances of being physically hurt are pretty low, your more likely to be vocally assalted or followed, stuff like that. Late at night when the bars let out, your chances get higher.

Just keep in mind, it is a city with many types of different people. You never know who your going to run into. When in doubt, take a cab or walk with friends, especially if your a woman.
