My fiance and I are researching southern Maine and planning on a trip up in the first part of next year. I want to live close to Portland, because I'm planning on starting up a film pro. Co. There. We both love the great outdoors, hunting, fishing, boating, water sports, winter sports. I'm wondering which. Area would be best. I want to have lots of animals, so I'm thinking outside of Portland, right? But we would have to be close to Portland for work.

Look around in the villages north and west of there if you want to be near the white mountains. If you want to be near the ocean then look near Bath and Brunswick. We did a maple producers tour in Southern Maine and there are some great places down there.

Depending on your budget......where you look.

I would look around Buxton and Saco.....there is nice farm country there.....Portland would not be a long commute..probably less than 1/2 hour..and the ocean is only about 20 mins away. Getting up to the lakes around Sebago would be very doable....maybe 45 min drive. Good Luck

What do you think of as "close" to Portland? For example, Bath would be about 45 minutes away (I think, maybe a bit less). Falmouth has some rural parts -- perhaps you could check there. Of course, a lot depends on your budget.
