Default Portland area school systems

I'm interviewing for a job based in Portland (that would also require some NH, VT travel). I currently live in a seaside village in Massachusetts, so love the whole New England life style.

I've only been to Portland once or twice. We're looking to keep the best of what we have here: village-type community, good school system, older houses with character, preferably with some culture in the community or nearby. We like being near the water, too. School system is probably the number one priority.

Any suggestions? Are the Portland public schools good? What other towns would you recommend?

I don't mind a bit of a commute for something really great....

Thanks in advance for the suggestions.

Hello! Based on your description it sounds like you might like Cape Elizabeth. Nice community with a reputation for some of the best schools in the state. If you use the search feature you can probably find some threads mentioning the area. Good Luck with the interview and hope this helps.

Same thing popped into my head tlb. A bit spendy, but cheaper than coastal in Mass.

I would also consider Falmouth, Cumberland and Yarmouth.

This just came out from U S News and World Report
Best High Schools Search - US News and World Report

Funny thing is we have 2 kids that grad from Greely(Cumberland) and one is a sophomore and both the wife and I wonder just how good the school is from personal experiences. There are very good teachers and bad ones as well and I feel that this is pretty much true no matter which school your kids are at.
