I only have a few minutes since I am in the middle of making 3 pans of Creme de Menthe Brownies. One for a teachers luncheon, one for a bake sale, and one for my kids so they don't ravage the first two.

When we looked we wanted a garage for sure since we did not want to be shoveling snow and cleaning cars all winter long for sure. We were surprised at how much the garage requirement limited our choices especially when put next to our walkability need. We do not have a garage. This didn't seem to be much of a problem for me this past winter even with the great amount of snow. My husband, teen sons, and resident brother would be quick to point out that I was not the one cleaning cars and shoveling.

I haven't noticed a lot of pretension here but I think that may be equally about me as much as the area itself. I really just filter that stuff out most of the time. There is a great deal of environmental consciousness here and I suppose you could be looked at funny if you arrived driving a Hummer. Oh and there was one funny incident where I was saying something about my kids asking to get McDonalds passing a drive thru on the way home from dinner. One of the moms in the conversations, with no hint of irony, said "How do they even know what McDonald's is?" Pretension and clueless, there's a fine line. Not to say that I think there is anything wrong with not feeding your kids that crap. I wish I had avoided the trap myself. I just find it funny that someone may not have noticed that almost everyone else eats there at least once in awhile.

Phew... didn't burn the brownies.

I think in your price range, for the size you want, you should be able to find a real gem. With our 9 person household we had to look big. We went above your ideal price but still below your top range and did very well (no view though). I don't know much about places outside of Portland. I may branch out later but I am enjoying getting to know things here for now. You may want to look over in North Deering or for views along the Back Cove.

We have been welcomed by both the old timers and newbies.

Gorham is a real community....sorta Norman Rockwell in appearance...with American flags hanging from the telephone poles and band concerts and lovely old colonial and victorian homes on the Main Steet and on the tree lined side streets. It also has some really nice upscale developments with beautiful new homes.

It is convenient to the mall and to Portland....but has enough in town that it really isnt necessary to go there very often. It is also a college town.....we were pleased that there was a concert series at the school of music.

We are going to start going into Portland to a UU church and will then spend time afternoons exploring Portland. (It is a beautiful old city). I can't say enough good about this part of Maine.

We just came back from a drive up to Lake Sebago State Park--and got a season pass to all the state parks in Maine. We intend to do a lot of exploring this summer.
Good Luck to you.....may you find just what your looking for.
It's really nice to see things are working out for you elston!
I'm glad you're happy with your move to Maine.

When the kids were young we got a Maine State Park pass every year....good move. Glad to hear you like Gorham, my fav brother-in-law and inlaws live there so I spend alot of time there.

With the horrendous traffic in the village and the grocery and pharmacy being a huge Hannaford super store and Rite-Aid I'm not sure I can agree with the "Norman Rockwell" reference.

The Gorham House of Pizza and Amato's are pretty good places to eat, never tried the Chinese joint tho. Use your pass to check out Wolf Neck and Two Lights state parks.

Hannaford and Rite Aid ; Its all part of the mix.....and makes trips out of Gorham.....less necessary. We did get take out from the Chinese resturant....it was pretty standard. We have enjoyed the House of Pizza and also the Sebago Brew Pub.....havent tried the "fine dining tonight" Inn in that lovely old Bed and Breakfast....we aren't much into dress up fine dining experiences these days. Love the Gorham Grind coffee house!
I also found a real barbar shop, not a salon or metro-sexual styling boutique.

I like the old buildings on the corner of Maine street....hope someday the old theatre building gets a rehab...and the Chinese Resturant blding is really a pretty structure if you could get it back into original condition. The Sierra has closed....the space is for lease....I would like to see a diner type place go in there...but we will see. If not a resturant....a card and gift shop would be a nice addition to town.

I do not think you will have any trouble finding exactly what you are looking for. There are so many places that we found in Maine that are simply wonderful. We came over from Scotland to house hunt and checked out several places and we were so impressed. We have two daughters so the schools were at the top of the list of priorities. The most difficult thing for us was to decide on which area to relocate to.

As someone mentioned the taxes might surprise you and perhaps the housing prices. One the other hand there are some real advantages such as very low crime, breath taking views, peaceful surroundings, and wonderful people!
