Relocating Portland Transportation
Hello,
We are relocating to Portland with a job in Kittery and wanted to know what type of public transportation is available. My partner does not drive and public transportation is the only option. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

You can try Googleing Concord Trailways. It's a bus service that runs daily between Bangor and Logan. They have several stops along the way, I don't remember seeing Kittery on the route but it wouldn't hurt to look. Other than that, I'm not aware of any other public trans that run from Portland and Kittery.
Could you perhaps move to the Kittery area instead? Just a thought.
Good luck.

Honestly, I think it would be a pain in the you know what, but possible. I think there is a train or bus from Portland to Old Orchard Beach and then a bus from there to Kittery. Ride sharing would also be possible. Honestly, though, price wise and time, from the research my non-driving spouse did, he found the commute to Boston would be less difficult from Portland.

You want public transportation from Portland to Kittery? That's a pretty tall order and you might be able to take Amtrak and get off in Durham, NH and take a city bus from there.
If you are talking about public transportation around Portland, well, the transit system kind of sucks and unless you want to go the mall or downtown, then more then likely your best bet is to either walk, ride a bike, catch a cab, or find someone to drive you around.

I looked up info on Portland's Metrobus system, and it seems to just provide bus service only in Portland, and
at the Maine Mall just over the line in South Portland.
What surprises and disappoints me is that, for such a major tourist city that's also Maine's largest, Metro doesn't run on Sundays or holidays.

Public transport is virtually non-existent to, and in, Kittery "proper". As others have probably posted, the Amtrak "Downeaster" doesn't have a stop in Kittery, and regarding the bus transit - well, it's hard to find. If you live in and south of Newburyport, Massacussetts - or in and north of Scarborough, Maine - then you'd be able to hook up with local and regional transport services.
A co-worker of mine, who lives in Newington, N.H. (a 'burb of Portsmouth, N.H.) bought a hybrid vehicle for his commute to South Portland...his wife only commutes downtown to Boston 2 days a week (telecommutes the remainder of the days).
I realize this may not be much help as far as your real estate location targets -- but I hope it helps as far as the regional commuter options (we have no "Acela" here!!!)...

Hate to write this, but it is Maine after all. You usually make do with own transport. The communal sense shows in other ways. Portland itself is a great walking city, especially on the peninsula. There may be car pools, ride shares etc. I'd check in one that. Seriously doubt there are any slug lines.
