Default favorite restaurant for a special dinner?

Where do you go for a special dinner out in the Portland area ? (I.e. anniversary, big promotion, etc)

Seems like there are so many places to choose from: five fifty-five, Hugos, Fore street .... etc ?

Fore Street Restaurant. You'll need to make reservations weeks ahead.

Or, go right when they open up their doors and make a reservation for that night. Fore Street holds a certain number of tables open for walk-ins. I never gone on a weeknight, but I've heard you can walk right in. On a weekend night, expect to wait in line outside and be a bit flexible when you eat that night. I would recommend going first thing, reserving your table for later in the night, and go have a cocktail somewhere else before coming back for dinner.

and yes, its worth the waiting in line!

You're right broadbill I had forgotten that they keep a few tables for walk-ins.
We have always made reservations well in advance.
When James Taylor played in Portland last year Fore Street was booked for that night a month in advance. It happened to coincide with our wedding anniversary so I was shocked that we got the last reservation for the evening a full month out. And you're right the place is worth the wait.
