Looking to move to Brunswick
My husband and I want to leave WDC for Brunswick. Anyone out there live in Brunswick? Do you like it? What does the town expect from the base closing?

No ones knows the impact the closing of BNAS will have on the local economy though you can bet there will be a significant impact on some local businesses.
Brunswick, like most of Maine, is holding it's own for now. Jobs are scarce all over Maine and with the economy dropping daily there's no light at the end of the tunnel yet.
The closing of the base will bring some good housing on to the market and it should be fairly inexpensive.
My brother lives there and he likes the town very much.

Wdc?
 Where is "WDC"?
We've visited Brunswick twice in the past year to visit Bowdoin. I'm impressed. Seems like a very decent,
warm, hospitable downtown area with several good restaurants and the college, being one of the best liberal arts colleges in the country is one that the area can be (and
is, it seems) very proud of. We're thinking about renting a house or townhouse there next winter so we can visit easily/ a lot. I haven't been able to find much info about the level of economic impact the base
might have. Surely there will be an impact, but I can't
find any details on projections which probably exist in
terms of the waterfall...housing, jobs, etc.

My brother lived in worked in Brunswick for a couple of years and loved it. There are a lot of nice area's of the coast near by and close to Portland. They just had a ground breaking on the new Amtrak station that is due to serve the Downeaster in 2010.

I've read on other posts people saying that Maine is one of the most expensive places to live. It can't be any more expensive than Northern Va.....how much is a kwh? I read someone's reply that they pay .18 per kwh, is that right?

According to Money Magazine/CNN's cost of living comparison table (see below). Burke & Fairfax weren't available so the closest city they have is Arlington (compared to Portland, ME):
Comparable salary (to $70,000/yr in Arlington, VA)
in Portland, ME
$58,676
If you move from Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA to
Portland, ME ....
Groceries will cost:
7% less
Housing will cost:
39% less
Utilities will cost:
28% more
Transportation will cost:
5% less
Healthcare will cost:
4% less
