Any independent coffee shops with free internet while I'm there?

Skip breakfast and lunch and go to Gritty Mc Duff's brewpub at about 2:30 or 3:00 PM. Have two pints of their beer and if you still feel hungry order their calamari, or fish n' chips. If you're not hungry have two more pints. By now you won't be hungry. Have two more pints and then call a taxi. The'll be happy to call for you if necessary. If you don't eat, the six beers wiill cost you around $24.00... less if you drink the special of the day.

I second kellysmith's suggestion about the The Brea Lu Cafe on Forrest St for breakfast- very tasty!

Also heard the Miss Portland is back open under new, native born ownership- should be a tasty breakfast there too.

My brother just told me The Porthole has phenomonal breakfasts. Something about apple crunch pancakes that now has me drooling just thinking about it.

Genn, The Port Hole used to be just a hole in the wall place where the local guys working the waterfront went to breakfast. It has since been re-done, not upscale, very casual and now caters more to other business owners working in that area. Their food is good, again casual, but nicely priced family style. As usual, stop in next door to Seabags and say 'hi' to my sister!

I wouldn't come to Portland without going to Gritty's for food and beer.

I liked Gritty's; how does it compare to $3 Dewey's for food? Which is the better of the two to stop for lunch?

IMO, pub food is pub food. I prefer Gritty to Deweys, Deweys is much darker inside. Sort of has a cave like feel to it.

I agree with island mermaid here elston.Deweys is OK but the place is rather cave like. As far as the food goes, I worked at Gritty's as a brewer for years. They make everything right there. They don't hand cut french fries(who does anymore) but from the shepherds pie to the fish n' chips it's all good and with the beer made right there it doesn't get much better for lunch!
