YUM!
Well I can't explain it or defend it....but I love it..(my father used to offer cheese with apple pie)..and not a mild cheddar at that! I think it has to do with not adding sweet on top of sweet but choosing sweet topped with savory. But then again in thinking about what is often served with cheese for a light dessert ..... Pears and camenbert, Apples and Blue Cheese......Jams and fruit conserves with Brie....They just seem to go together.

But I promise...if you were to stop in......I would have some Gifford's or Beal's Vanilla Bean ice cream to top your apple pie.

MMMmmmmm! Bring it on, either way.

Amatos or Miss Portland?

I don't understand the attraction with Becky's. Yes, it is a Portland institution, but there is nothing great about the place that I see deserving of all the hype other than their business hours. Five years ago I probably would have loved the place. It seems to have been a different place only a year and a half ago.

I would also suggest Hot Suppa for breakfast, brunch or lunch. Their corned beef hash is the best in town and their fried green tomato benedict is awesome. Plus they put kielbasa in their mac and chese.

Duck Fat would be good, too.

k-luv, I guess my attraction to Beckys may be tied to what it used to be?

As I've posted before, when the waterfront was booming and the fishing industry was at it's best, the place filled up at 5am wth all of the local fisherman, it was the most fun filled atmosphere. The food isn't spectacular, it's just decent.

I really like The Port Hole now. I haven't been in to Miss Portland Diner since it reopened.

Miss Portland. The kids had school today so my snow walk consisted of herding cats (like that sometimes) to school.

Excellent place elston! I stop by there whenever I have to be in that area. Nice classic Italian sandwiches! Highly recommended.

You partially answer your own question. The food is mediocre, but it's a Portland institution with great business hours, and a fun atmosphere (I wouldn't know what it was like a few years back though). I suggested it because OP asked for places unique to Portland (and on a budget), not necessarily the BEST food around (which is also why I suggested DiMillo's- another not-so-fantastic food place).

I agree with the Miss Portland suggestions and Hot Suppa as well. Hot Suppa is the best breakfast in Portland proper, but it's not uniquely Portland (many places have similar menus, atmosphere and quality anywhere). So, if OP wants the best breakfast food in Portland, go to Hot Suppa, if they want atmosphere and unique, go elsewhere.
