So it's the first spring in our new home and we have a lot of new uninvited "friends" coming in along the baseboards on the ground level. There isn't any brush, trees, or stacked wood along the outside of the house, so i'm not sure where they're coming in from.

Anyways, I know that carpenter ants are quite common in Maine, so I'd like to get some recommendations of 1) a pest control professional that you think is good, and 2) any home, non-toxic solutions that you have found to work.

Thanks for any information.

I usually put down a dozen ant traps. Usually the kind with food they take back to the colony. Damned if I know where that is though. They show up every spring for a few weeks then nothing. Haven't seen any this year. I also spray around the house with something, but I don't remember what exactly. Some chemical i mix with water.

I would love to read other peoples thoughts though.

Get a Anteater.. its non-toxic and runs on its own...

Ants are a real PEST to get rid of with a non-toxin solution.
There are some bugs you can buy, you put a dome over the ant hill (if you can find it) and the insects lay eggs in the ants and the larva eats the host and other ants.

i had forgotten about borax. I made a mixture last year of borax and.....sugar I think. Place around on little trays and the ants eat it and bring it back to nest.

Thank you for the replies. We ended up treating the foundation to create a barrier and haven't seen any ants since. I'm going to use that borax/sugar mixture the next time though.

Borax and pets do not do well together.
So if you have a dog or cat be mindfull of them as well.

We're having the same problem. I'd be interested in knowing how you treated the foundation. If you had a professional treat it could you reccommend them to me? Thanks

Hi Suzy, we used these guys: Alpha Omega Pest.

They were great. they did not suggest a huge expensive 'treatment plan' or anything like that. Instead, they recommended putting down a single application of a barrier around the house and seeing how that did before doing anything more aggressive (and expensive). We followed their recommendation and the problem has been solved. No new ants this season, so far.

good luck
