Default Gyms and health clubs

Hi everyone,

I'll be moving to Portland in the next few weeks and am trying to get a feeling for good health clubs in the area. Mostly I'm looking for a place to go after work to use a treadmill, elliptical, and some of the strength training machines, free weights once in a while but not a lot.

Can anyone recommend a place that is near downtown? It looked like there was a Bally's on Marginal Way is that still there?

Thanks!
Patrick

Almost everyone I know prefers Planet Fitness on Marginal Way. I don't think Bally has any locations in Maine anymore.

I use Planet Fitness. I have gone there for years. The equipment is ok, but the monthly dues are cheap. That's what keeps me there. The place can be extremely busy so you'll have to find a time that suits you best for what you want to do. There is also a World's Gym down the street from PF. PF and World's are owned by the same people (I believe.) There are also some local health/fitness clubs that charge quite a bit, but offer a whole lot more. Google 04101 and gyms to get the entire list.

If that's all you are looking for Planet Fitness is probably your best bet. (I go to the one in Westbrook but it sounds like it's the same) It is no-frills, no classes, no pool, no raquetball or anything like that. Exercise equipment and free-weights and places to stretch with balance balls, etc. (Actually in Westbrook they just started a few classes a week but they are at off-times for me). It's cheap!

I prefer PF over Lifestyles, 100 times over. Cheaper and nicer, IMO.
