Try indoor camping if they're little kids. Make blanket tents and stuff like that.

All great suggestions!

We used to take my girlfriend's brother and sister to Jokers where they had a great time. If they're a bit older, Maine Indoor Karting is a blast. Also, if it's in season the Red Claws or Pirates are interesting too. Ice Skating at the Portland Ice Arena can be a good time. Swimming can be done at many indoor pools like Reiche and Riverton (it's a .pdf file... open swims are the best and Kiwanis is outdoors), South Portland Community Center, and even some local hotels allow you to pay $2 or so to use their pool (I know the Holiday Inn downtown does this, so you can ask for their schedule), so give the closest one a call and see what they say. There is really no shortage of activities for the young ones in the Portland area despite the weather.

Also, when we were rowdy during lighting storms, my parents used to hand us large metal poles and tell us to "balance them HIGH in the air" and race through the large open field in the back yard. The sure loved to keep us entertained!

Take them to a slaughter house or chicken processor to see where meat comes from. Make them stack wood!

Put them in front of the TV with a couple of poptarts and break out the Allen's Coffee Brandy for yourself!

If you have a local YMCA you could take the kids swimming, most have indoor pools. You can also check to see if you have any indoor mini-golf.

We actually went to Mackworth Island last week in the rain - pure desperation on my part to get my 5 yr old and 2 yr old outside. It wasn't so bad. We had rainboots and jackets on and the trees provided a nice canopy over the trail.
