Default Target Shooting around Portland

Hello all,

I moved to Portland about 6 weeks ago and have been trying to find a place to do some target practice around Portland. Ideally I would like to find a sand pit or quarry or other piece of land that is suitable for shooting. I would love to find a place that was free, joining a gun club is too cost prohibitive at the moment. Thanks!

I'd love to tell you about a place but frankly there aren't too many open pits that allow shooting around here anymore. People left the pits such a mess the owners stopped the shooting. We usually take a walk down a powerline now in some isolated place. Just be sure there are no houses around. Find a valley between two ridges away from any roads and you shouldn't have any problem.

Check out L.L. Bean's Outdoor Discovery schools (link HERE ). I know they have shooting at their facilities in Freeport (I THINK) every tuesday. I went a few days last year.

As far as just open land, it's iffy at best. My dad shoots at our house in Bethel, but the neighbors aren't thrilled (he does follow the laws and is well within his rights). I'd say scout it out... get out there and look. When you see a plot of land that looks good, find out who owns it and ask permission. Makes some friends who have large plots of land.

The powerline suggestion is a good one too. Check it out. As long as your licensed to do what you want to do and scout it out well enough, you should have no problems.

Plenty of areas north of Portland, but good luck in that area. Maybe ask someone at Cabelas or another local gun shop.
