Default Jobs-Wages in Portland????

Hello everyone,
My husband is considering attending USM this fall and I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of:
1) How easy is it to find a job waiting tables in a good restaraunt (excellent experience with 5-star dining and have owned our own bistro)
2) What might the average tip percentage in a good (expensive) place be?

Also, what are the more kid-friendly areas of town?

Thanks!

Sheebo,

I don't think you'd have any trouble finding work in Portland, esp with your experience. There are a wide variety of restaurants in and around downtown. I'm not sure about the pay, but it's probably decent (don't most server make minimum wage + tips?).

I don't have any kids, so I can't give you any perspective in that area.

Apathizer, thanks for the hopefull words! Servers actually make less, much less, than min. wage--usually around $2.35/hr, which is why the tips are SO important!

I think I read recently that there are 600+ restaurants in the Portland area...my daughter works for Au Naturals, the original one in Falmouth. Lots of great restaurants and they all seem to be busy.

The top rated restaurant is probably Fore St located in the Old Port.
