Hey there!

We are looking into Portland as a possible place to relocate (we've looked at about 17 states/cities so far)!!. We're looking for a place with good schools, low crime, family oriented/friendly (coming from Vegas that can be pretty much anywhere!), city feel (we're originally from NYC) and somewhat affordable housing (SFR, Townhomes,Condos)...Any information, pictures, suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

You know, based on your description you could find that in nearly every city. Not to sound condescending but that's pretty general criteria. What do you want in a city? Weather an issue or not? Your age group? Line of work? Will you be driving or using public transit? I think with a little more info it would be easier to assist you with suggestions.

I want culture (museums, art galleries), family oriented things (zoo's, aquariums, parks that kids can go to in the summer and not burn their skin off on the slide because it's hot). I'm 31, DH is 30, son is 4. I work in Human Resources, DH is a Network Administrator...weather is not an issue, we curently live in Vegas and we're originally from NY. We can drive or use public transportation doesn't matter. We're easy going just want someplace that will offer more than what we are getting here. =)

Based on your description and if you're set on Portland then I would suggest the Pearl District. It has the city feel, walking distance to downtown and all the attractions you seek. It's not cheap, more upscale, trendy and yuppyish though. If that's your scene then you should fit in well. Also, you may look in to Westmoreland (suburb) as well, I understand that it's family friendly but don't know about the "city feel" you're looking for. You said that driving wouldn't be a problem, so I imagine getting to where you need to go should be easy.

Either location should do the job if you're set on Portland.

Hi,
The Pearl is not kid friendly. Sellwood/westmoreland (neighborhoods in SE Portland) are very kid friendly as are many areas of NE/SE. If you live close in to the downtown area in any neighborhood you will have a city feel.

I like the west side. Beaverton and Hillsboro seem to have the most "city" like feel.

How about activities? That's a big one.

We want to get back to Beaverton, or Hillsboro, to be an hour or so from the beach.

If you want to ski, Clackamas puts you almost an hour closer to Mt. Hood for snowboarding or skiing. Troutdale if you want to wind-surf.

Default Portland move info.

I actually just joined this site because I saw your posting and thought the responses you were getting were a bit confusing for you. I will tell you right off that I am a Realtor here in Portland. I am also a parent and an urban oriented person. There are so many wonderful neighborhoods that are close-in to downtown (museums, opera house, symphony, central library...all kinds of culture). The Pearl is really not family oriented and Beaverton and Hillsboro are not city-like at all, they are the truest kind of suburbs (sprawl, commutes, subdivivion developments, etc.). Westmoreland is an example of a great city neighborhood with a good school, proximity to downtown and delightful local business district (even a neighborhood farmer's market). Price range will be the biggest factor in which spots will be possible for you. This is not an ad, but honestly if you are not working with a local Portland Realtor who knows the neighborhood, I would be happy to send you relocation info.. Relocation is one of my main specialties. I don't do burbs, but would gladly direct you if you decide to go that way. Good luck!

How does Westmoreland compare safety wise to Lake Oswego? Can one happily and safely walk around 9-10 at night or jog at 5AM without fear? How do the property values compare to Lake Oswego?

Westmoreland/Sellwood (they're divided by a street) is a safe area, but is very different from Lake Oswego! Housing prices are much much less and it's a more laid back family neighborhood that has transitioned over the last 10 years from a working class neighborhood to a more upscale neighborhood. There are mostly independently owned stores, antique stores, small restaurants, etc. It's not a fancy place like Lake Oswego, but it's a nice area with lots of kids who play outside, etc. More like Lake Oswego would be nearby EAST Moreland, which borders Reed College and has larger lots with fancier homes, less of a community feel.
There are lots of nice neighborhoods in Portland.

Check out the area near Chapman Elementary in NW (26th and Raleigh area), or Sullivan's Gulch/Alameda area, Irvington, etc. All of those places are pricier than West Moreland but still a lot less than Lake Oswego.
