I prefer Portland Hts as well. I particularly like the areas near Washington Park b/c it is an easy walk to downtown. Dunthorpe isn't my scene, but I think I described it correctly.

Thanks so much all for sharing your thoughts, preferences, and experiences. One concern I do have is the issue of slippage on the hills overlooking Portland. Would the Portland Heights area or the areas near Council Crest Park or Washington Park have these sort of issues or is that area laid out differently (flatter, back from the hill). Where specifically is the Portland Heights area?
I am unsure if I should post this in another thread, but I am wondering on the SW side if there is a lot in the way of natural therapies, such as chinese medicine, natural food stores etc? Also I read there is supposed to be a bike path being built from Lake Oswego to downtown (hopefully that will happen sooner rather then later). Is there decent biking paths or jogging paths in the areas you have all mentioned? I am an avid outdoor person and somewhat of a naturalist, and what I do for a living requires alot of meditative walks and runs (even in rain , or especially in). |

"Where specifically is the Portland Heights area?"
When you are downtown look up at the hills. They are mostly Portland Heights. Portland Heights traditonally refers to the Southwest neighorhoods that you reach going up Vista. The Northwest heights are mostly "Arlington Heights"- but I've heard people refer to all of the hills that have views of downtown as "Portland Heights". As far as slippage- that really depends upon the lot and area. Most of the high end streets off of Vista after the Vista bridge are somewhat flat and do not appear to have slippage issues. All of these places are very expensive. |

Thanks babycoleslaw! I noticed you have just purchased in Tigard and are moving soon. Congratulations!!!!!!!! How very wonderful. May the transition go as smoothly and seamlessly as possible
. I did notice by peaking at some old threads the other day , that you were also looking in Lake Oswego in addition to Tigard and Tualitin (spelling). Do you mind sharing what persuaded you against Lake Oswego? If not that is okay, but I was curious. What were your thoughts overall about Lake Oswego? We are back and forth between Lake Oswego and Santa Barbara, CA. Can't wait until our visit to Portland. Thanks again and many well wishes for a relatively stress free and wonderful move. |

I loved LO! The deciding factor for us in not going with LO was the education for our child with a disability. Tigard/Tualatin is known for their inclusive approach which is definitely what we want for him. Other than that, the homes are overpriced in LO but they are in most of the Portland areas and if money is no issue for you Lake Oswego would be perfect!! Really a beautiful area!! Good luck to you! ![]() |

Well, those sellers better get it together, aye? Or they are going to lose a sell!
. It definately sounds as though you made an excellent decision and your son is so blessed to have you take so much care and precision in finding the best situation for him. It really touches my heart to hear that there are programs out there for the disabled children that pointedly have an inclusive approach. Yes, the prices right now are pretty shocking in LO (and yes, all over the Portland area.). I guess my visit will tell me if it is worth the money compared to Santa Barbara. Good luck to you and your family!!! Quote:

You really can't go wrong. Definitely spend some good time there driving around, visiting with locals etc.. and you'll know when the area is right. And thank you...we don't plan on having our son segregated from society as he grows so it shouldn't be so in the schools!! So many times these kids are placed in self contained classes where they don't have many positive role models to emulate. We truly feel beyond blessed to have him in our lives....along with our two daughters, of course!!And Lake Oswego and Santa Barbara are two completely different 'feels' so it'll be interesting to hear which you choose! Good luck again! |
