Every Light Rail in the US is designed well with the Exception of Fare Enforcement. That is one thing the American Systems can not copy off there European counterparts. I think Fare enforcement officers should be stationed on each train and in that way fare evading would drop. I floated this idea past my Portland friends and they thought it was a great idea. As for the WES line its the butt of jokes on various Transit sites. It wins "Ugliest Train in America" very easily. It looks like a bullet on steel wheels.

What is WES? It sounds like MAX is having the same problems as Muni down here in San Francisco. We continually have our fares increased & service cut back. And it's the powerful union that's the most expensive part of the system. I don't know how this happened but the drivers are gauranteed the 2nd highest wages in the country. The union leaders okayed a small cut in their wages but the members voted it down. Now there's an initiative on the November ballot to dismiss their current contract & present a more reasonable one that does away with what most SFers believe are outrageous wages & benefits.
Downtown the trains are in a subway but the 2nd half of the trip is surface. Riders pay the driver when they board the train. Maybe Portland could try that out.
When I lived in Sellwood I worked at Drake's 7 Dees out on SE Stark & 165th (I think). I usually carpooled with a coworker but on the icy or snowy days I would go to Lloyd Center & board MAX & it had no trouble getting me to work in that icy part of the city.

Ah, I cannot find the street newspaper story about the WES line and the senior TriMet official who negotiated that deal, but IIRC it goes something like this:
The WES line runs on a short spur independent railroad line, which is a privately held company. That railroad line,

Anyway that railroad line has sub-contracted (leased) with TriMet allowing a portion of its line to be used as to commuter passenger service.
TriMet wanted to extend MAX service to downtown Hillsboro, because of the manufacturing and employment in Beaverton and Hillsboro. But in order for MAX to do the political deal for the land corridor and county highway system at-grade street crossings, Washington County Supervisors all but demanded a rail connection from Beaverton directly to the Southeast to Wilsonville.
There are some very crowded county roads commuters use to go from residential bedroom suburbs that parallel the railroad line. This WES line deal was forced on TriMet, which is really a bus system (and the MAX is operated like a bus which uses steel tires.) TriMet is out of its league dealing with the US Dept of Transportation and Labor Dept. when it comes to heavy rail.
Long story short: WES is a heavy rail line, recognized as a freight-line and must obey the rules and such as a heavy rail line. Per the local daily newspaper, It cost under $2.00 per passenger boarding on MAX light rail, but on average $20.00 per passenger boarding (for a $2.30 ticket, a loss of $17.70 per boarding) using ridership numbers of fall '09.

Aside: the cost of acquiring the land, clearing, creating the flat grade, and building the rail bed for it's own light rail system from Beaverton to Wilsonville just isn't going to happen. Total waste of money.
My point: sometimes mass transit systems have to play politics, and the loss they face may be more to do with politics than bad management.
But everyone knew this already, didn't you?
And yes, the paint job, the used passenger cars, and all the rest makes for just plain ugly, ugly rail cars.
but I hear the seats are very comfortable.

Another thing that Tri-Met has tried to keep quiet about the whole WES disaster (or as my friends and I call it, 'The Failroad') is that they tried to get the Portland & Western to abandon that whole section of track. This would have meant using cheaper rail cars, and they wouldn't have had to put in the block signaling system. P&W's parent company politely told TriMet to suck it and that was a VERY wise move. Had they caved to TriMet (like most companies do), the west side would have no freight rail service and it would have one useless light rail line that nobody uses. Apparently they're not done trying to get the P&W to give it up because I've seen rumors that eventually WES will eventually go the way of the do-do bird. The article also mentioned (in a non-committal way) that a Beaverton to Wilsonville light rail line is being studied for the 2040 master plan.
Something very similar happened in the late 80s and early 90s with what is now the Westside MAX. That whole ROW was originally a Burlington Northern freight feeder line that served up to six healthy-length trains a day. From what I've been able to dig up through public records, it appears that the City of Beaverton and Tri-Met essentially badgered the BN until they caved and abandoned the line. It was still profitable and would be of great use to us today but instead it's used by MAX. Also, I found another document that states that the P&W (who took control of BN's short line assets in 1994) tried to halt Westside MAX construction as late as June of 1995, saying that the freight line was of value to the area and was still profitable. They were not successful.

Image is everything. MAX is the equivalent of a H2 Hummer or Iphone to the people that love it. There is no way to convince either of the owners/users of their products shortcomings or defects. Even if gas was $4/gal, Hummer owners would pony up $100+ a tank, just to maintain the image of being a Hummer owner. Iphone users all routinely avoid any flash enabled sites just so they can ignore the fact their phones are not capable of technology that "lessor" phones possess. Logical arguments, like economics, will just fall on deaf ears.
If you judge MAX on all its supposed goals and benefits, it is a failure. If you judge it on the image that people riding it think they are getting, it's a success. One worthy of a $100 tank of gas, a $1500 two year contract with data plan, or a $27 million dollar shortfall.

I challenge your statistics. The MAX line also connects to a couple of bus lines, most notably the #72 bus line. I am not convinced by your numbers that the Green line MAX is to blame. Nor do I believe your statistics are correct. Please post a reputable newspaper source that quotes these numbers. And specific newspaper reports that criminals caught committing such crimes traveled exclusively by MAX line to and from the crime scene. Any such County Sheriff numbers like you are claiming would make it to the Oregonian.
You do know that the Elected Officials can stop the Orange Line at the Clackamas county line, don't you? Have you started any petition to halt the expansion of the new Orange line into Clackamas?
Portland area does not yet have social / economic / racial stratification and isolation like I experienced elsewhere. And I personally will do what I can (which may not be a lot) to halt stratification and isolation anywhere and anytime I can.
Again, I challenge the veracity and the implied causality of your claims.

I can recall when the first light rail was being built people referred to it as "WHOOPS on Wheels."
For those of you who are not familiar with that disastor here is some information regarding Washington State's Whoops.

As a bus rider, I kind of start resenting the building of a new MAX route since I know it will mean the end of more bus lines. The Gateway Transit Center used to connect more buses with MAX than it does now. That includes my number 15 Belmont which does not stop there any longer.
But then I am biased towards buses. They can go most anywhere. And more of them should be winding up at transit centers.
I don't know about statistics and all that but I have more fear of riding the MAX at night than I did the Chicago subways where police actually patroled the trains. But that's just me.

Sorry, I still don't think the Sheriff proved his point. Because phenomenon A and phenomenon B occur, does not logically prove any causality. Second, no distinction of type of crimes committed, nor did the sheriff relay any arrest / conviction to the broad "crimes." Are we talking vandilism to cars? restaurant walk-aways? rape? muggings with threat of violence, or was it just a lot of sheriff harassment of homeless panhandlers due to a complaint by the management company of Clackamas Town Center?
No, I seriously still don't believe that report has any substance behind that sheriff's interview.
