We traveled to both Portland and Seattle in May and noticed a big difference in the amount of rain each city received on a daily basis...I'm wondering if this is typical? In Portland, there was a bit of rain each day but it wasn't heavy or long in duration. In Seattle, there was a daily downpour. Portland also had brief periods of sun and clear skies which offset the drizzle but in Seattle, I'm not sure we saw the sun more than twice in five days....is this normal?

We fell in love with Portland and it is the top contender for our next home so any feedback is appreciated.

Interesting, they seem remarkably similar in precipitation amounts, even during the month we visited. Thank you.

My hubby thinks we have better weather here in PDX but looking at the numbers, the weather in both places are almost identical. Seattle is incredibly beautiful and has a thriving economy. Our weather seems a bit drier and warmer than Seattle but I haven't been up that way enough to make a good judgement. Our economy is suffering but a lot of us telecommute to jobs outside of Oregon. Portland is also beautiful and more charming and full of great neighborhoods. Good luck to you!

I can only speak from personal experience. I live in Portland and have visited Seattle only a few times, but Seattle always seems "gloomier". Even though the amount of rain might be about the same, I think we see more sun in Portland.

I've lived in both cities & being more coastal, Seattle tends to have more overcast days than Portland. And you're right, Portland's a lot warmer in the summer. There have been times when I've boarded a train on a sunny warm Portland morning only to arrive in a cool overcast Seattle.

If you are truly sick of rain then you probably won't appreciate the eight months of drizzle here in PDX. BTW, eight months is a conservative number. You are better off with Boston weather.

Portland is about 3-5% drier than Seattle in terms of the number of rainy and cloudy days, and the summers would be a little warmer in Portland, as it is farther from the sea. But it is like saying Las Vegas is cooler than Phoenix. True, but.....The main point is both are VERY cloudy and rainy, and it can easily rain for three weeks straight in either city. Winters are probably about the same, since Portland will be more prone to valley fogs. Beautiful, green cities with amazing outdoor offerings though. I would see which offers you a job.

There is a great book by a Meteorologist at the UW about Pacific NW weather. Well worth the investment if you are concerned about our weather.

We have 'micro climates'.
