???Why do you imagine cloth bags take longer to load than plastic ones? And, if you don't want to be a gentleman and help a lady whose paper bags have gotten wet and failed that is entirely your prerogative. I think it is fair to say that Oregon would very much resemble Idaho or Nevada if much cooler heads did not in-migrate and rescue the land from callous, exploitative, self gratifying ____________ (rhymes with Tic Tacs). The complete lack of shame at the absence of any shred of regard for the planet we have been given by a subset of American's never fails to make me tremble.

Sorry, but in all due respect, and in my most humblest opinion, this is a giant load of crap.

And, cloth bags will take longer to load, because they are DIFFERENT than plastic or paper. And when people use THEIR own bags, they will be more particular when they use them.
Do you think they are going to allow cashiers to just throw the stuff in sacks the way they do now, ? Personally, I think not. Thus it will take longer.

And I will help a lady in need, I believe most men will. So that is a silly statement. First, why even create the problem by banning plastic bags?
And second, do you honestly believe there is always going to be someone around to help a female (or male for that matter) when a paper bag rips because it"s wet?

As for the rest of the comments, the fantasy bubble needs bursting and whatever's inside needs to gently float back down into the real world and get a grip on reality.....

Have you seen how the "Green Movement" has forced polluting and inefficient companies to turn around and look at how thier processes affect the environment for threat of consumer boycotts and subsequent loss of revenue for shareholders? This started in the '70's with the psuedo-indian guy shedding a tear.
Those very same shareholders may have green beliefs. Even if they don't, the others will follow the money, which benifits us.
We don't use DDT, we don't drain toxic waste into rivers anymore, we have vapor recovery nozzles on our gas pumps which fill hybrid vehicles that go home to energy efficient homes in cities with Urban Growth Boundries.

The turn around is happening my friend. Just it's not happening overnight. But that is not the issue. What is the issue is that is that it's happening, albeit slowly, which is a hell of a lot better than no change at all.
You can only change something that huge in increments. But they will have to be well thought increments or the masses won't accept them.
Slowly boiling a frog works better for the boiler than the boilee.
The way our society works, there will always be less people boiling that being boiled.
But more people will boil than do the boiling.
And you and I tend more to be the boilees. (otherwise known as the sheep.)
The end is the same, but the journey is better for at least one of the parties, let's just hope in the end game, that party that wins happens to be the one that benifits mankind for the long run.
Pay attention to the agenda and how it's being used. Hopefully we are steering the right party on the right track.

Honestly, I believe the City of Portland should/could follow ground breaking true Oregonian ideas such as the bottle bll, something that seemed as initially outrageous as banning plastic bags.

The difference, is that the Bottle bill was rooted in intelligent thought with consideration of the consequences, and not just a political popularity contest based on fads and totally useless, skewed, propagandized, almost true information that could certainly not be called facts.

The Bottle Bill was a good sound progessive idea that was a result of good sound science and thought instead of "Feel Good Politics".
The Bottle Bill accomplished somethiong good.

The plastic bag ban, if it happens, will be repealed.
