I went to culinary school in Vancouver, BC a few years ago then had to return home to the USA. I've been planning ways to get back and live in Vancouver, BC ever since. I hear Portland is similar, but I haven't been. Can anyone with experience with both places give me a comparison? I love Vancouver's beauty, safety, cleanliness, food, kind people, asian communities, liberal government, and even the weather.

Hm. Interesting you say that and your city-data username is "NewYorkGuy." Do you live in New York City right now?

I am from New York City and love all three major Pacific Northwestern cities: Vancouver, BC, Seattle, Portland!

However, my least favorite of the three is Portland.
In some ways Portland is similar to Vancouver but in other ways very different. I feel like Seattle is much more similar to Vancouver than Portland.

Portland has diversity but Seattle is more diverse, and Vancouver is even more diverse than Seattle. Portland has virtually no high rise skyline, while Seattle and Vancouver have nice high rise skylines. There are other things too that Seattle and Vancouver seem to have more of than Portland.

What NaturalUrbanBalence said. I would be worried about finding employment in Portland compared with Seattle or Vancouver, but I don't much about your specific industry.

If you are a US citizen, there are logistics to living and working in Canada that you need to explore. It's not that easy to just decide you want to live in Vancouver. Getting a long term visa to stay there and hold a job can be complicated and perhaps not possible unless you go for citizenship. Please check it out before you make any big leaps.

I grew up in Vancouver, BC, now live in Los Angeles, but I'm planning on moving to Portland. If you don't mind losing half of your pay check to taxes and have other huge taxes on top of that on everything, then go for Vancouver. It is an amazing city! You can get so much further (financially that is) in the US. I do miss Vancouver though.

I was just in Vancouver last week for the first time and was very impressed. It was very beautiful and much like Portland vibe-wise. Victoria was also lovely. I like Seattle too, but it seems like I'm always stuck in traffic there .

Vancouver and Seattle have a more International/world stage feel to them. Portland feels almost like a secret. A great secret - I love it here.

Of your list, diversity is probably the biggest difference between the cities to me. Portland at time can be all white faces. Being from San Jose, Ca this was quite amazing to me. You can live in more diverse neighborhoods, but Portland is overwhelmingly white. This however, is changing, and the city government is all for it. Portland is a very liberal city.

Portlanders are friendly, but sometimes not forward about it. If you are shy here you may not make friends quickly, like some other cities.

As ST mentioned the economy is a concern here as is the still overpriced housing market. Unless you "got nuthin' and nuthin' to lose" you'll want to have your ducks in a row job-wise.

Good luck to you.

Very different places. Portland would be far more affordable but not nearly as vibrant or diverse as Vancouver.

Seattle has one of the worst traffic congestions in the country.

I wonder - with Portland's economic difficulties and Seattle's high prices, are they really significantly better choices for making a living compared to vancouver bc?

All three cities are very liberal..

all have too much rain...

Portland sucks (small, boring, and very liberal-granola) 3/10

Seattle rocks ( cool town) Has culture.. Mini San Fran... (TOP PICK-OVERALL) 8/10

Vancouver is gorgeous ( Pretty, but socialism is rampant) Canada will gobble up half your income in taxes... they talk funny as well - They don't like Americans in Canada, It's a little brother jealousy thing.. 6/10 (LOW score because it's in Canada)
