I know there are lots of threads here on 'things to do while visiting portland' etc, but they seem to be very touristy oriented. I know Portland is nothing like NY, where the difference between tourists and natives is quite distinct, but I very much dislike looking / feeling / acting like a tourist.

So what do the native Portlanders (Portlandonians?, Portlandans?) do for fun during a typical day / night (night especially, as I've been having to manage my usual night-time activities during the day, due to the lack of 24-hour businesses )?

Most people stay at home especially during the winter months, playing with their various tech toys or watching their various tech toys, or playing on their computers/blackberrys (now iPhones and Droids), etc. etc. etc. Many people have a dog and take walks at dog parks, go hiking, thrift store diving, hanging out in bookstores, surfing the web in internet cafes (a few stay open late but since I moved to semi-rural I no longer know where).

I can't think of a single "tourist" attraction in Portland that isn't also frequented/patronized heavily by locals. Nothing like Fisherman's Wharf or the Eiffel Tower where the vast majority of visitors are tourists. As long as you aren't standing on a corner puzzling over a map, you can pretty much go and do anything you want and not be perceived as a tourist. Wherever you go you will be mingling with tons of locals as well as other visitors. In my opinion, that's one of the best things about our beautiful city.

You may want to use Yelp for any help with night life. I don't think there are too many people on this forum who are out at the latest bars, restaurants, clubs. I have found Yelp to be more helpful in that dept.!

That's right Yankeemama. Now if this were 1977 and San Francisco I could tell you what's happening in that department!
