I am trying to narrow down my search of homes for an upcoming move to Oregon. I would like to stay close to Portland (working at OHSU) and I am looking for a city that is dog friendly with little diversity (not a lot of illegal Hispanics). I don't have any kids so schools are not an issue. I would prefer not to have a long commute. I am coming from the desert so I am looking forward to the rain and clouds. Any help would be really appreciated. I really want insider perspective.

I have a real estate agent sending me new home listings in various areas. I'm really curious about Happy Valley and Oregon City.

Thanks so much for any and all feedback!!!

Based on your criteria, you might want to check out the Sellwood area in SE Portland, towards Milwaukie. The commute to OHSU wouldn't be too bad (you might be able to take the tram). Sellwood has a funky feel to it and it's definitely pet friendly. There's even a cool pub in Southeast called the Lucky Labrador where dogs are welcome, even encouraged.

Portland is not very diverse ethnically overall. My guess is that there is a higher proportion of illegal aliens living near farmland (Hillsboro, Oregon City, etc.) compared to the city, but again that's just a guess.

Everything is close in Portland. The commute would definately be easy from Sellwood, Wesmoreland, Lake Oswego areas. There are also some very nice hidden residential pockets in South West as you head south and west from OHSU. I would rate mass transit as average to above-average and normally very punctual.
