I really don't see why this is such a big deal. If you can spend hundreds of dollars or more on an airplane ticket you can spend a few more on a cab once in a while.

But there would still be more people on an additional late train from the airport than on some other MAX or bus routes outside of rush hour(the Yellow Line for example and some bus lines serving outer North and NE Portland). When I've taken it the last train from the airport at 11:50 pm it still had a good number of riders on it. After midnight, there are still a number of people who just arrived or are still arriving. In general you have five flights or more arriving from around 11:30 pm or later at PDX. Why not just move the train schedule back so you have a last train to accomodate late arrivals?

I don't know why some posters are attacking anyone who suggests this idea ... Although it is kind of endemic among some people in Portland--this idea that you're not allowed to suggest that anything is ever wrong with this town...As opposed to the constant curmudgeons on the other side who suggest that every thing is wrong with this town...

Bus lines serve a ridership that, by-and-large, cannot afford alternate transportation like taxis. The airport serves a ridership that can.

While I believe that to be partly true, TriMet has one of the highest "choice" rider-ships in the country. I forget the % but many have cars and choose to take public transit.

More evidence of our excellent rail system.

But then for people who didn't know it when it really did get you everywhere, and before the bus lines were severely curtailed and eliminated, I suppose it seems pretty good.

The rail systems were never a substitute for bus routes.

It is much more difficult to live carless in Portland than even ten years before.

It isn't a bad system and it's probably better than some cities but Number 2? I don't think so.

NYC delivers an extensive and unbeatable mass transit experience in a 12 square mile area known as Manhattan. Outside of Manhattan the level of service drops rapidly. NYC busses and trains have no accommodations for bicycles. Service on weekends is nightmarish... ... see what happens when you rest on your laurels.

It is nightmarish on weekends especially if you live in Brooklyn or Queens. I have never forgiven the MTA for getting rid of the number 9 train, the W train, the V train, and G service to Forest Hills.
