Looking online and in the Mercury a lot of what is going on for new years costs money, in some cases $30-40 admission! Anyone know of public events or free/low-cost admission for happenings downtown or inner SE?

This page has lots of events listed, many in the $10-20 range.

A few in this Oregonian article.

But generally speaking, if they're going to be providing entertainment and food/drinks, it's not going to be free.

Here're some events. Most cost ten dollars and up, but there are several that are free.

thanks for the comprehensive listings of whats going on, a cover of 10-15 is doable for me as long as there is live music, etc!

etc!...? Nevermind, I know when a horse is dead. Since my forum buddies have decided to take the high road, as it were, who am I to do otherwise. Years ago... 2003? I was in Salem as a newcomer to the area. My date and I went up to Portland for New Years Eve to this very unassuming little Jazz Club somewhere. I don't know if it was uptown, downtown or what because those distinctions didn't make any sense then. What I know is that it was inexpensive and there was music. A five piece with occasional additions kept the music going from ~10:00pm till after 1:00am. To say a good time was had by all is an understatement. If Jazz is to your taste you could do worse than start with some of the jazz club listings. Jazz musicians love to play for the most part and will not be watching the clock. YMMV. HNY.

Ack. So it is. Though I probably should have guesses as it was from the A&E. This years' listing is probably in next Friday's paper.

New Years is the most random night ever. Just show up at any old place that's decent and it's bound to be memorable. (Good or bad)
