Well...my thoughts...and of course I could be quite wrong, but I get the sense that deep down you've already decided on Tuscon.

And you'll probably be so busy while doing your residency that you won't have much extra time to enjoy any of the qualities of wherever you move to.

I will be going to either Tucson or Portland with an open mind but not sure if either place will be somewhere I want to live forever...or settle down at least. I need to experience the places before I can choose to settle down....hence residency training.

Yes, I think PDX is a better city too. That is why I am having such a hard decision to make. I am not sure if I will feel like 3 years is a long time...what are your thoughts? Anyone?
Ok sounds good.

The 3 yrs will fly. I think what you will remember more are the people you socialize and work with. Whichever place you go, you can easily vacation in the other. Both nice extremes making for nice place to get vacation. I would think about the people you interviewed with and the career possibilities. I'm sure I'm not making ur decision any easier

I will add my 2 cents though on where u will live long term.

From many friends in college, including many docs today...The majority move back to where they grew up. Actually more like 9 out of 10. These are the stats!

I am not trying to be a smart ass, but where is that stat? I am in the profession...I do think that people like to stay close to their families making them come back to where they live and also they like to serve the communities where they grow up. But when you think about it...urban populations are growing, medical opportunities/research are more prevalent in major cities...so most docs tend to go where the people are...and they go for training opportunities.
Check out the places these docs have trained before they started working in PDX:

Thanks Metlakatla.
I haven't completely decided quite yet. I have a good sense of Tucson and was in PDX for a week in Dec. I just can't seem to shake the pull of sophistication that PDX offers. It is very tempting.

The fact that I will be very busy also is a tempting reason to not care so much for location and go where the better residency training would be....this is where I am having a hard time deciding. And I think there is enough to do in Tucson during my time off, I have friends there, and perhaps the PNW/SAD is something I shouldn't mess with til I am a little more stable with my career. I will have to work very hard these next 3 years and probably won't have too much time to do things around PDX.

I also feel like I could save a lot more money in TUS...everyone is in agreement with that right? 48K is the salary in both places...rent and COL is probably high in PDX vs. TUS. This way I could both save money and work on my career I suppose.
Or do you guys think I will be missing out big time by not going to PDX? The PDX board is very enthusiastic about their city and really discourage the move to TUS.

Thanks, interesting link.

Well u sound like smart guy specially that you are studying the locationsso much. I was more one-dimensional at that stage, only going where career was best. Good luck, I think you'll make the best decision!

I wouldn't worry about where u save more money.

48 k is not much in either place (enough to live well at this point). Youll make tons more in 3 yrs! Don't let that be a factor, imo.

Thanks for trolling.
When you mentioned not being able to save much with the 48 K salary, I thought...this guy doesn't know what he is talking about. 7 more days left for me to make a decision.

Anyone that is not a troll have any suggestions? Thanks!

Hi md,

I wouldn't draw a connection between trolling and knowing what i'm talking about. You might be talking to your future employer for all you know.

your 48k salary will depend on ur lifestyle. If you are going to live cheaply, it won't matter much where you live.

Also, as a doctor, you can make 48k in a few months.

I felt sorry for you that's why I told you i'm a troll.
