But is it PORT-lun-ders or port-LAN-ders? No, seriously!
This comes from someone who used to get caught up in the Michigander/Michiganian debate ...

Oh, I figured that. I was wondering about how you pronounce the word for a Portland resident. I'm assuming the accent falls on the PORT in "Portlanders."
My poor wife got the "Ore-GONE" lecture not too long ago. If we're going to be residents one day, we'd better learn the right pronunciations.

Why can't we call it the beach? What defines a beach then?

I saw more middle fingers in LA than I knew what to do with. Portland is 2 hours or less from very sandy beaches, personal note, call it "the coast" while in the PNW. Great to hear!
Thanks Nature Girl--fantastic to read such unbridled praise, particularly in a venue whose center of gravity often seems to be discontent. The happy folks are out-and-about I imagine. Perhaps a direct correlation between time spent online and that discontent? Anyway, my wife and I are moving to Portland next week, after two years of planning. As someone who's lived in 7 states, been to nearly all of them, lived abroad and done his homework, you guys live in paradise. I hope P's popularity, coupled with our intensely mobile society, doesn't destroy its fabric, but here we come anyway. The final move for my nomadic ****. The house, the kid, the whole 9 yards. Now, if we can just learn to pronounce everything correctly!

Don't worry when it gets too bad, we start up the lies about it raining for 9 months a year and it scares people away.

Thanks for asking about the beach? No prob. But really, why "should" we call it the coast opposed to the beach? Still wondering,,,
