Default Do kindergartners go half day?

In most of the school districts in Portland, do kindergartners only go half day or almost a full day? I know they are changing it everywhere and of course this would effect my plans moving to Oregon.

I'm not sure, but here's an article about it that might clear it up (or not).
Oregon Senate approves bill requiring free full-day kindergarten | OregonLive.com

I think the answer is that most do, but not all (for now), and some charge extra?.?... not sure. And that they all must offer it by 2015. The part I'm unclear about is that they keep saying "offer" it, but does that mean "require" it? or is it something you can decline if you want?

Unless budget conditions improve significantly I wouldn't count on full day kindergarten.... in ANY school district even if it is available today. If your moving decision is determined by that you had better stay where you are now. The only place I know it is available in in low income urban schools in NJ, and that is under attack by suburbanites.

My kids go to school in PPS district. Half day is free but a full day has a fee. You can go to the PPS website and check any school. The kindergarten info. will be there. Good luck.

Thanks for the information. My decision of moving is not based upon the school hours, but it does play a part in planning day care, etc. etc.

When I was in kindergarten about 17 years ago, it was half day.

I suspect that the number of students vs classrooms & teachers will be a determining factor. If an additional half day is available for a fee it is probably contingent on the availability of space. For that reason I would avoid neighborhoods with a lot of new housing (typically purchased by families with young children).
