Middle-class diversity in Portland?
We are a soon-to-be multiracial family living in the Seattle Metro. A good place to be, for us. However, there is the possibility of a beneficial job transfer for my husband, to the Portland Metro. Because we are a white family adopting minority children, we desire to live in an area with at least some community for us among families who are white, multiracial and/or minority. All colors. Ideally, some sort of black middle class would be great. Are there any areas somewhat local to PDX that fit this description? We are very family-oriented, I'm a stay-home mom, looking for relatively safe neighborhood, decent schools. Hope I'm making myself clear. I have always noted on my own travels that Portland is pretty white, but there is supposedly 6+ percent AA, so they must be in there somewhere!
Thanks for your input.

The inner North East area of Portland would probably be your best best. There are some fantastic neighborhoods in the area, it is central, and by Portland standards, there is some diversity. Irvington K-8 has a significant African-American population, as do Sabin, and Beaumont. The local high school, Grant, is one of the best in the city and is about 30% Black. Concordia is also worth looking into.
That being said, the neighborhoods are still not terribly integrated. Still, just going about your daily routines, you'll come across a variety of ethnic and racial groups. I live in the area and love it. It's a great place to put down roots and I can't recommend it enough. Good luck.

Is Concordia a city or a street in Portland? Is Killingsworth St. part of NE or N Portland? I also desire an ethnically mixed area in Portland. Why do people look down on North Portland and admire NW so much?

I totally agree with you supernova7, I think that concordia is a college in NE 29 st, and Holman, which is located mostly around a black mixture community, and killingsworth st. is a main street which runs mostly on NE porltand but also in N portland, Also Killigsworth st has mainly black and hispanic, from my point of view the black community ends around 42 street and then the mostly latin community is around 42 street to 72 in the nieghboorhood of cully, I know of this because I live there, HEHEHE
