Hmm think I will reply to a few things here.

In general & about the young/old debate: It is always great to have different perspectives. Looking back on it, I'm honestly surprised my parents didn't give me some warnings when I said we wanted to move to Oregon. Maybe because they would probably bail me out if I ran out of money for rent. Anyway, yeah the response was a bit discouraging at first, but I am quite naïve and could use a good slap in the face with a realistic perspective every once in a while... At this point, I'm more or less decided on moving to Ohio temporarily, but I definitely want to return to the west coast.

Minervah: Thank you very much for your kind words of support. I do hope to come to Oregon some day, at very least to visit!

Metlakatla: Thank you! I am definitely a west coast girl at heart (bf often calls me a "hippie" for my political views and eating habits ) and will be happy to come back when the time is right. It seems that apartments in Ohio are quite incredibly cheap, so hopefully we should be able to save up plenty for the move.

philwithbeard: "whole foods and organic vegan food selections year round" AWESOME! More motivation to move there

Yankeemama: It would be nice if I could convince him to come here instead. But, considering that he has a professional job and I don't, I'm not in a strong position to argue. I do not have family in Ohio, but on the flip side, he doesn't have family here. So, one of us has to take a leap of faith.

carolinajack: I will keep Kerns in mind; thanks for the tip! I think what we should do is visit Portland and get an impression for ourselves of what the different neighborhoods are like.

As for the whole thing of whether living in Ohio will suck... I hear again and again that the west coast is more exciting, has a better culture, etc. I think the west coast is great, and I can feel the difference. However, I'll let you guys in on a little secret, as if it was not already obvious from how I have an internet boyfriend and said in the original post that I don't care about clubs and trendy locations... I am a huge computer nerd. I don't think it will bother me that much where I live, as long as there's good internet! I think the main issues will be how I'll get to work without a car, and whether I'll find a good store for organic & whole food. Anyway, it's only temporary.

Good luck to you, from a middle aged mom. You sound like you have your feet firmly planted on the ground. Take care.

SW Portland (Corbett/Terwilliger, West Hills, Marquam, Multnomah Village, Barbur, Lincoln H.S.)
NE Portland (Laurelhurst, Grant High School, old tudor homes, brickhouse apartments, very east coast-ish)

Fairview/Wood Village/Gresham. Bakersfield-style, with access to rail and bike lanes.

if you want down to earth, affordable apartments close in to the city center, close to buses, walkable streets close to all the great spots and not expensive while you look for work, the kerns neighborhood is great, right between sandy and burnside. if you need apartment names i can help you.

the bike scene is so good here you can save on gas by cycling to work , walking to whole foods and fred myers, utilizing the parks, enjoying the cafe culture without burning gas.

go to portland neighborhoods on the web and check out the kerns

I don't think you meant to quote me. The response is confusing. I already live here but thanks!

You thinking of moving to Portland? Our winters are milder, and we have great bicycle paths... You only need a job, which unfortunately like many other places, is not easy to come by right now.

You'll love the many whole foods and organic vegan food selections year round in our grocery stores (we're on the Left Coast, closer trucking up the I-5 corridor.)

Come'on, we could use your posts on the Portland sub-forum.

Phil
Haha, I would love to help out. The job situation is what is keeping me from moving there. Portland is my favorite US city, plus I'm a huge Timbers fan.
