Hello...We will be driving from Reno to Portland on Tuesday the 18th but looking at the suggested routes given on Google maps as well as others, we are not sure which would be the best way. The first suggested route is CA-139 N through Klamath Falls then over to I-5 Eugene for a total of 539 miles. The second suggested route is CA-89 N to I-5 near Mount Shasta. It shows the second option as about 45 miles longer but estimated time not far apart. Our concern is available gas and gas mileage due to the grade driving up. We will be driving our car as well as a 16' Budget truck. Maybe one is better with weather conditions now also? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Take the Shasta route. And the truck will go as far or farther as the car. You should only need one fill-up.

It really depends on what car. It might be a Prius... just saying. Diesel isn't magic. They are subject to the laws of physics. Heavy load. Mountains. Mileage will be lower than light load, flat ground. Budget trucks are awful. I would insist, absolutely insist on a brand new truck. Even then I would carry a bible in the glove compartment.

U-Haul is worse. I prefer Penske. The best, of course, is a family member with a truck.

We usually go the Shasta City, 89, Susanville route. This time of year check the weather & road conditions at Tripcheck, Cal Trans, etc.

Thanks for the info! I was thinking the Siskiyou Pass was the reason the maps tend to suggest the other route first but wasn't sure. Seems like the Shasta/89 route will be the way to go. We appreciate the help.

Great route.

All things being equal otherwise. Diesel will outperform by 25% or more. A loaded truck with identical loads and gas getting 8mpg the diesel will get 12mpg
