I believe it is recycled. A word of warning though, ever since I saw a woman wash her cat's ass in one of those fountains I have never used one.

The history of the "Benson Bubbler" from Wiki:

"Simon Benson was a tee-totaler and he wanted to discourage his workers from drinking alcohol in the middle of the day. In 1912, Benson gave the City of Portland $10,000 for the installation of twenty bronze drinking fountains. These fountains, known as "Benson Bubblers", are still in use in downtown Portland. Today there are 41 Benson Fountains, forty in Portland and one in Sapporo, Japan, one of Portland’s Sister Cities.[5][6] Conservationist Francis J. Murnane was instrumental in preserving the bubblers, his first successful project."

I believe there is also one on Woodstock Blvd in front of Key Bank, and one in front of Benson High School, but I don't know if they are originals or copies.

Probably more locations that I can't remember.

Yes, I do know that well known fact about James Beard and yes, many S.F. Bay Area chefs including chefs from Yountville are J.B. Award winning chefs. Technically the Napa Valley is part of the Bay Area which I made clear in my previous post. And I am sorry that you don't enjoy restaurants that have won the three or four stars from the NY Times or other highly regarded publications but I DO enjoy them, maybe not once a week but often enough to feel like I have tasted heaven.

A friend in L.A. said the new dining trend there was "Portland restaurant." I thought that was kind of funny.

There's a bubbler on Council Crest, which used to be an amusement park, I've read.

But the water is cleaned before it comes back out right? I'm really interested in how this works, if anyone can link me to something that explains it?

Actually, Portland didn't do too bad in the James Beard awards this year. Gabriel Rucker of Le Pigeon won the Riaing Star of the year award, and Andy Ricker of Pok Pok won the award for best chef in the Northwest, in a category that had chefs from three restaurants in Portland and two from Seattle.

I don't find food important enough to want to spend (about) ten times the cost to eat at somewhere like the French Laundry. Even if I do have the money to do it, I find it an insulting waste of money. Kind of like people who buy 200K cars. And while everyone might statistically consider Yountville to be in the SF Bay area, but it's over 60 miles, and two hours away. That's not in the area, by my considerations. You're not likely to pop over there for dinner if you live in San Francisco.

To each his/her own but the cost is pricing so many Portlanders out of moderately priced eateries it's sad.

And the next pretentious, yuppie invasion is descending upon poor old Pioneer Mall.

Sure there are changes that could be made for the better like having outside access but this is making it a different sort of place completely.
