Portland draining reservoir after man urinates in it – This Just In - CNN.com Blogs

Good thing they saved you all from a small fraction of one part per million of sterile pee, for the insignificant cost of ~$28K lost revenue + $7500 cleanup.

I especially love the part where the administrator isn't concerned about the science of it all.

If you want to drink pee, (sterile or not) go for it.
It's not like we have a shortage of water around here to replenish our drinking water supplies.....

Things must be different in Colorado.

They've always needed a higher and better fence for that reservoir.

Do people think that the frogs and newts who live in the reservoir go up on land to eliminate? Birds flying overhead never poop in it? There's no rational reason for doing this. Ignorance is bliss and that ignorance has been broken, so now the city has to pay $28,000 to pacify the minds of the irrationally squeamish...by refilling the reservoir with water from the mountains that has had owl poop and otter pee in it.

Water bureau administrator David Shaff told KATU it's not about the science.

"There are people who will say it’s an overreaction,” he said. “I don’t think so. I think just dealing with the ‘yuck factor,’ .........

The YUCK FACTOR wins out over science and reason.

I see it as a big waste too. I've drunk contaminated water in way worse conditions before and never suffered for it.

Well there is a level of Yuck Factor™ to this occurance. Although maybe not at the level of your average children's swimming pool.

Ha, I was just talking to my girlfriend today as we ate lunch overlooking that very reservoir watching a duck swimming around in it about how they have to drain the whole thing sometimes when someone pees in it or throws paint in it or what have you...

I agree with OP. $35k-42k > yuck factor.

Chriminy! I'm sure that reservoir has plenty of bird droppings, just as all open reservoirs would, and likely all kinds of animal pee from wherever that water streamed from to begin with.

We're already paying through the nose for our potable water to be treated at the plants.

So, yes ~ it is DEFINTELY an unnecessary waste that the taxpayers will have to be responsible for.
