I'm going to see if I can find some pics of OldTown and NoPo Alberta/Mississippi St. Maybe Goose Hollow as well. If I can see the area, I can get an instant feel if it is the right place for me.

The Pearl has got to be one of the most over-rated 4-blocks of suburban american food and shopping....why do people get hung up on this neighborhood? The food is decent, but not great. The shopping is no different than Clark or Washington County and the people are all like normal people anywhere else in America. I vote they aren't pretentious but that Portland liberals are just jealous they're neighborhhod isn't as ugly as theirs!

I was just in Portland for several weeks, and always enjoy revisiting, that is the nice parts. I was very skeptical however when my very young nephew took me over to his "new neighborhood"--Alberta. Supposed to be the new hip place for the youngsters to hand out. Looked very scary to me. His mother very concerned as well. But he is of age, a musician, so all we can do is worry and hope he will have the good sense to stay safe. Anyone know about this "great new area" of Portland? Ugh...

Ok, I'm not a young musician....LOL and if I relocate to Portland that area will be my new home. I heard nothing but wonderful things about it. I want an area that's OPPOSITE OF PEARL. Small cafe's, thrift stores, cheap movie theaters, music venues, libraries, parks (sketchy neighborhoods) make the city (REAL) and I feel right at home. The moment I see big shopping malls, Gucci purses, Saks Fifth Ave....I start to panic I promise you Lilly that no neighborhood in Portland will compare to (what I consider dangerous)
Have you ever been to East St. Louis, BRONX NY, Hell's Kitchen, West/South Chicago, sections of Philladephia, Detroit, Camden NJ???? Portland is a utopian nursery compared to areas I've seen. Alberta-is supposed to be bohemian, artistsic with lots of cafe's, music venues, small bookstores etc...
I don't find tattoe'd 30 somethings with dreadlocks to be threatening in any way. Most of those people are very kind and live life on their own terms, which I happen to admire

When I think of Pearl I think of a suburb in a city. Another upscale area of snobs that look down on the homeless and poor. Everything has to be neat and tidy like some artificially manufactured community. I feel sorry for anyone who grows up in this environment and one day falls on hard luck, they wouldn't know how to survive. Imagine going from wealth to the ghetto and shaking with fear at the sight of a black man on the corner

But the pictures are nice, but even these don't show all areas of the city.

I completely agree with you. You can only get a "partial feel" and that's all that some people have, considering that everyone will not have an opportunity to visit prior hand. However, the pics can tell you a lot, especially if they are good one's. You can see the kind of people and the type of community that makes up each area.
Did you check out N/NE Portland? Alberta/Mississippi ave?
