Carol - if you look at the links I included in one of my previous posts, you can see what Multnomah Village has to offer. We viewed the townhome last Saturday which is being poorly "flipped". Another area I would consider living is the Riverplace area on the Willamette River, which is downtown Portland RiverPlace in Portland, Oregon : UnSprawl Case Study : Terrain.org. A suggestion I make to friends who are considering a move as drastic as yours, is to rent, live in the area to see if your needs are met, and then look at buying. Sellwood is another area I love, due to it's community spirit and historic homes.

This is a site with great reviews of neighborhoods including many pictures of each.
For people like me who are so interested in everything about Portland, that was a wonderful site. I teach in Brooklyn & so I travel into "the city" (ugh) everyday. Portland doesn't even seem like a city in some parts. Laurelhurst & Ladd's Extention are so lush & green. I don't think I will be able to afford those areas, but they were beautiful to "visit".

Ladd's Addition is still very nice, very green, shady, quiet with lots of large trees. I have a good friend lives there, has a small bungalow. Prices of course have gone way up. But I believe there are some small apartment buildings (condos?) and duplexes to look into.

Ladd's Addition is still very nice,
I fell in love with Ladd's Addition with that coffee shop in the middle of all that green.

It really does not seem like a city at all, not like a Boston, New York or Chicago anyway. What a pretty area.
I just like looking through that site, looking at neighborhoods and all. Imagining.
