Hi all-- I am thinking ahead when my family will be able to leave NYC. I wuold ove tolive in the Portland area. I ahve sarted reseraching the public universities, and if i am reading this right, PSU is **so** much more expesnive than OR's other universities. Is that true? about $33k for that location when the others are about a third the cost? Is that the onle college located in/near (drivable) Portland?

PSU is not expensive at all. Check out this spreadsheet for the 2011-2012 school year.

http://www.pdx.edu/sites/www.pdx.edu.bao/files/media_assets/BAO_PSU_2011_2012_FeeBook.pdf (broken link)

About the same as any public college. 12 units (full time) would be about $2100 (w/ all of the fees)

Reed is the private college that is REALLY expensive, but consistently ranked as one of the best liberal arts colleges in the nation. One of my good friends goes to Reed, and sometimes I hang out with her study group....let me tell you, those are some brilliant kids!

Portland has a surprising amount of offerings in terms of public and private colleges that you kids can attend, in addition to having an EXCELLENT transfer policy between 2 year CCs and 4 year universities. At my community college, if I am accepted into their nursing program I am automatically accepted into OHSU's when I finish my pre-reqs. I have never seen that in any other states that I have lived in (AZ, CA, MD, GA)

I don't know about costs, but OSU has an extension building in PDX. University of Portland is across the river, and Portland Community College has four or five locations across the city and is fairly well regarded even for a Community College. Reed is good and I hear it's the most expensive. We also have Lewis and Clark, and Marylhurst. Warner Pacific is coming out as a reputable college, but I think they're mostly for adult education.

What are the colleges you would recommend for Education? My husband is in school now for his education degree..he wants to teach history ( his passion).

Thanks to all-- I think that I may have Portland State U confused with Oregon State U. is one of them private? (I *know* I saw one that came to ver 30k-- and I was terrified that this was the cost of a public university education!!)

University of Portland is private. Portland State and OSU are both public.

And modest. I used to work with a Reed graduate, and when I asked him what the college was like, he said, "It's like Harvard, only more rigorous academically."

I agree. Seniors must prepare and defend a thesis to graduate. Many don't finish, Bud Clark was one of those.

From what I've heard about Harvard, the hardest part of the school is getting in. So that's not saying much.
