I've been thinking recently to move me and my family up to Portland from New Orleans. Now, my biggest issue with that is the job market and cost of living. The job industry that I'm in is construction. I've been in it ever since I was 15 and I'm 21 now and its what I'm most passionate about. What is the construction industry looking like? Also, cost of living (apt rent, utilities extra). Any information would be greatly appreciated.

What are your limits with Rent? Do you need to stay under a certain amount? Are your kids school aged or younger? ( reason being for parks close by or schools). There are high end areas and there are low income areas for a typical 2 bedroom I have found the lowest is $500 to $650 but thats not the high end or middle class area. Are you looking to be exactly In portland or further south in Salem which will be cheaper but less jobs? Help us..help you..

The construction industry, which was over-saturated to begin with, took a nosedive a few years ago. It has improved a bit in recent months but is still a shadow of what it was. By all means do try to secure a job before deciding to move, unless you have something to fall back on at home (family).

Rents vary, can run the gamut from $500'ish to $1200 or so, depending on where you decide to live. You'd need to decide if you want to live in or around Portland, or in the burbs.

Hopefully you're familiar with the climate here? I've met several Louisianans who love our summers but have struggled with our long cool winters.

Good music scene here, if a bit different from NOLA's. We have a couple of terrific NOLA musicians here (jazz and blues). Food here is good and varied but expect to be disappointed in the lack of cuisine you're used to. There is plenty to do here during the fairer months.

My brother's work laid off 2/3rd of their workforce a couple of years ago, and cut everyone else to 20-30 hours a week. He's now back up to 40 hours most weeks, but they're not looking to hire the rest of the people back any time soon.
