In the future you might consider doing a bit less generalizing yourself. You construed the OP's remarks in the worst possible light, and then took it on yourself to be the Politically Correct Police in "challenging" an attitude that existed nowhere but in your own fevered perceptions. If anyone needs "growth", I daresay it's you. If anyone needs to "interpret" things the way they truly are rather than how they think they are, it's you.

You could admit that you were out of line and over the top, rather than "chiding" everyone for their lack of...something, whatever the hell it is you were trying to say above, in dissembling fashion. But I think such an admission is outside your skill set. The internet is full of people who troll message boards and then leap on some unwary poster who is just seeking information; in other words, your M.O. not only isn't original, it's pretty much a cliche.

If you truly want to "makeitagreatday", I suggest either modifying your style or shutting the heck up. I gather your "racism" post isn't the first time you've gratuitously stirred the pot here. Why don't you find something else to do with your time (assuming that you don't think or aren't willing to admit that your behavior is destructive and unwanted, which admission would, hopefully, cause you to modify same)?

I hate extreme political correctness, but I hate sweeping generalizations and stereotyping even more. Not all Asian countries are as you describe and even within the ones that are, human behavior is as varied as it is anywhere. I would have had a lot more respect for your argument if you had tempered it with "SOME".

This is PURE Portlander... Love it.... One of the thing i missed dearly about Portland.

What has happened to this forum? Really disturbing stuff. I guess sitting at the computer writing things in bold such as, "All Asians Are Rude", is typical on Craigslist but I thought City Data was a bit more sophisticated. This Portland Forum is changing since I started posting last year. Unfortunate. Let's keep the racist comments like the latter in quotes from appearing on this board. Have a bit of class. Don't start a war on this thread if you want to get nasty. I laugh that most nasty posters on here would never say the vile crap in person.

Did you check out Wilsonville? It is known for being very family oriented, while being on the south part of the metro region which would make for a shorter commute to Salem.

Did you read the entire post, and the post(s) that prompted it? It seems like you're having a knee-jerk reaction to perceived "RACISM!!!!!!!" without realizing what was really going on here. Remember, relexive PC-ness obliterates conscious thought.

Yes---reflexive PC-ness. She didn't even notice that I said that there are exceptions to the generalization I made, and that it only applied to "most" Asians. In other words, I actually made the qualification to my statement that she was scolding me for not having made. But one thing we have here in Oregon is PC paranoia. People get fired from jobs that they've held for a decade for making an "inappropriate remark", even if that remark was innocuous.

I took a teaching course where the instructor spent two entire class periods trying to tell us there was such a thing as "unconscious racism". I asked repeatedly whether it was possible to have an unconscious emotion or perception. She said it was. None of us bought it. (Of course, her thesis was that you can act in a way that could be perceived as racist by an uninformed observer. But there's a huge difference between that and actual racism. If I don't hire a black person for a job, it could be that I didn't do so because I was "unconsciously racist"; it could also be that that person wasn't qualified for the job.)

I am tolerant of Oregon PC-ness, though, because it's a counter-reaction (albeit a violent overreaction) to previous decades' genuine nastiness. I prefer silliness to hostility, but I'll still call out the PC Police when they try to slap the metaphorical cuffs on someone.

Wink Whoa, whoa, whoa....

...quit the nastiness. I don't care about politically correctness and whether it's fashionable or not (???)...it's simply called being honest and polite...very simple.

Angry And one more thing....

...if you choose to have certain views...that is your perogative. But have some dignity and do not hide behind a computer screen expressing such....spew those views out to your fellow co-workers, employers, neighbors, etc. and learn from the feed back, mkl...I can only hope you are not a teacher. To the poster that thinks the word 'racism' needs to be defined....look to a child to tell you how he/she feels when they have been discriminated against because of their color or ethinicity.

Ignore button has been turned on. Don't go on with youranti- PC lecture. I read your post. Don't come to this forum out of the blue and try to stir the pot. Don't generalize in such an offensive way. Yes, I am done with you. Now button turned on. Let me get back to watching CNN. The ten year 9/11 ANNIVERSARY shoud remind some of you what hatred can lead groups of people to do to other groups. To my family and friends in NYC... I will NEVER FORGET. I am proud to be an American. All ethnicities and races are welcome in this country. Let's not forget that. Proud to be an American today. Haters, go away. Done.
