My wife and I are flying from Raleigh, NC to Portland next week to visit family and I am researching things for us to do while visitng your fine city. We are staying at a hotel (the Hilton I think) downtown for a couple of nights and the rest of the time we will be at a house in the "Sunnyside" area along Cesar Chavez Boulevard.

I've already found some threads about stuff to do in Portland like this:

Help me plan my trip

But I am curious about breweries / brew pubs I should visit that are in or within 1 hour of downtown. I would really like to visit at least one or two local breweries but don't know which might be the most fun/interesting to visit.

After reading this post: Your Favorite Portland Winery/Brewery or Pub/Sites

I was planning to visit Deschutes Brewey but looking at google maps it seems like it is way outside of downtown and several hours away is that right? I would love to visit it, but may not have the time so would prefer things closer to downtown Portland. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Portland Brewing (MacTarnahans) is in NW Portland's industrial area on 31st MacTarnahan's Brewing Company.

Close to Deschutes is BRIDGEPORT and Rogue Ales

What kind of beer do you like? There are so many breweries in Portland that it's kind of hard to limit it to just one to recommend.

The local paper has a beer blogger at The Beer Here - OregonLive.com

Deschutes would be my vote for brew pubs in the Pearl District(NW). Other choices I'd recommend are the Lucky Lab (close in SE or in Multnomah Village in SW), Hair of the Dog (also close in SE), or Hopworks Urban Brewery (HUB) on SE Powell.

Lucky Lab in SE or HUB on Powell would probably be closest to where you are staying. If it's on tap, I strongly recommend HUB's Secessionist Cascadian Dark Ale.

The only correct answer is "All of them."

I'm new here so I surely don't know most of the options, but:
- Widmer on the east side of the Broadway Bridge. Can sign up for a tour in advance but I think they are popular and booked early. Not a huge fan of their beer but they have a strong presence here.
- Amnesia on Mississippi?
- Upright Brewing
- The Mash Tun off Alberta and 15th maybe?
- Also on Alberta (among other places) the Captured by Porches beer bus - picture a food truck serving beer...
- Bridgeport is good, has some good hoppy IPAs iirc.

and many, many more! Have fun!

If you're coming from NC, remember that hops grow in the PNW and the brewers here aren't afraid to use them. I find IPAs to be too hoppy for my tastes.

I've been meaning to go to Cascade Brewing on SE Belmont.

All of them.

You'll probably have to restrict yourself to one beer per establishment if you want to visit every one in only a week.
