Hi all. My hubby, kid, dog, cat and I are moving to Portland area in 2.5 weeks. We're getting rid of most of our stuff and towing a small Uhaul trailer on the back of our sedan-style car. My husband will be working in NE Portland, and I guess I was looking for ideas for where to look to get an apartment (although we'd love to rent a home). We aren't city folk, this is just a temporary move, and we've both lived in Portland before, about 5 years ago. Just looking for some place within about 30 mi of NE Portland that is quiet, like a smaller suburb or something, and hopefully not too expensive to live in. Any thoughts, oh wise Portland-dwellers? Thanks for any help you can give!

How North East are you talking? Close in NE is quite a bit different then the outskirts of NE when talking about commuting. On the other hand 30 miles is quite a ways, but could take two hours to drive. You're better off using 30 or 45 minutes commute as a better indicator.

It will be near the Portland airport. He did clarify that he actually wants no more than 20 miles. But you're right, the minute time is more accurate. I don't think he wants to spend more than 30 minutes or so in traffic. His job now requires a 50 minute drive to and from and he hates it. Plus why waste money on gas? Thanks for the tip.

OK, I think Troutdale or Fairview will probably be your best bet. It's a pretty quick straight shot down I-84, Marine Drive, Glisan or Halsey.

The apartments closest to the Airport, that are in Portland aren't the most desirable. You'll want to avoid Wood Village (not much there anyways,) 181st, 162nd, 82nd&Sandy area, and much of Parkrose. From a tax perspective, avoid living in Vancouver.

These areas aren't absolutely terrible, but there are a lot of Section 8 apartments and the median income is pretty close or under the poverty lines.

Look at the Cascade Park West neighborhood in Vancouver so long as you anticipate moving on within 3 years. The interstate bridge over I-5 is in the replacement planning stage so the I-205 bridge will be a mess during construction.. and likely tolled. You will save nothing in taxes but the commute should be quick.

I would recommend Kenton (I-5 and Lombard). Gentrified, pretty good rent, and I can get from Denver (west of I-5) and Lombard to the airport in 10 minutes by taking Columbia Blvd.

Hamellr, thanks, we do want to avoid any areas that seem like they'd be trouble...and we want someplace safe for our little kiddo.
Thank you everyone. These are the kind of ideas I need!

Ok, I've seen several people say "close in" and I have no idea what it means...

Why don't you just move in to live at the airport? The rent's cheap and there's plenty of restaurants. Plus, someone else cleans your bathrooms!
