It's weird--we have the registers closed in rooms we don't use much, double pane windows, extra insulation in the attic. Next we're going after door seals.

I just went the sweater route. Works much better for the majority of the time, and it cuts down on the number of days where you even turn the thing on (at least in PDX).

WOW! Thanx guys. You really have just reaffirmed my choice in portland! I am a artsie type my self so that part will suit me. I've never really fit in here in houston because of that fact most of the " art " people are so bloated in the head they wont look at you unless you have a gallery or something of the sort! And the mexican food is a great relief lol I have to get my fix at least once a month! And yeah I figured the bills would equal out at some point. Though I like it fairly cool as well. Considering I'm going to have to get a apartment until I'm fully settled in it wont bother me much. Yes I am a smoker but plan on quitting so agian that wont bother me. I guess really now I wont miss much at all about houston!!! That no humidity thing sounds AWESOME!

@Random_walk how did your sinus improve / decrees after moving can you actually breathe? again thanx for the the tip on the food!!

It actually did by quite a bit (Salt Lake City has some ungodly dry air... enough to force a man to keep a glass of water by his bedside)

Oh, it's humid here, but when it's cold! Just the opposite of Houston.

IDK - in the summer, I was using quite a bit of chapstick and hand lotions & going through a ton of water. It's desert-like dry here in the summer, even if its not suffocatingly hot.

I feel it varies from person-to-person. My skin and lips chap, dry then bleed pretty easily, but I didn't get any of that when I was in Portland. Both trips were in late August.

In regards to the gas bills - here is mine (just received it today):

Company: NW Natural
Period: 01/17/12 to 02/15/12 (29 days, actual reads on both)

Charges:
Monthly Service Charge - $6.00
Gas Usage (71.7 @ 1.15355) - $82.71
2% City Franchise Fee - $1.77
Public Purpose Charge - $3.27
Total Bill - $93.75

We live in Clackamas County near the 212/224 junction (HV/Damascus/Carver area) and have a newer home (late 2000's) that is about 2200 square feet and is two stories. Our digital thermostat is consistently kept at 66-68, and our insultation is fair (windows/doors aren't drafty, but there are definitely cold pockets in the house & sitting next to a window/door can be a little chilly at times).

Hope that helps.

Good to know, wanderbygrace. We are wimpy Texans and keep our house warmer. We started off at 68, but when my hubby saw me wearing a hat to bed he turned up the temp Now I'm in favor of turning it back down but he likes it like this. Maybe we'll acclimate for next winter.
