Default Life in Cannon Beach?

Hi everyone, I just got a job in Cannon Beach and I'm wondering what the vibe is like in the NW coastal towns near the Washington border? Is it beach-centric or more rural with focus in tourism or logging? Are there any must visit places in or arround the Cannon Beach area? Also, how long does it take to get from PDX to the town? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cannon Beach to PDX is about an hour and a half, depending on the route you take.

Cannon Beach is a slow pace of life, but with great scenic beauty. Haystack rock, check it out online. Pretty spiffy. Just north of Cannon Beach is the heavily tourist town of Seaside. Seaside caters to the families and their kids, they got parks, and amusement rides. Candy shops, toy shops, and much more. Seaside is less then ten minutes away.

Cannon Beach is the complete opposite. Cannon Beach is far more peaceful, but they get their share of tourists too. Usually older tourists, as the downtown focuses on galleries and museums. A neat wooden theme in the buildings downtown. It's got a scene of people who walk and ride bikes, but a nice peaceful vibe and the smell of salty sea air. Seaside is where the "scene" is with the younger people.

Services and all basic shopping can be found in Astoria/Warrenton, which is about 30 minutes away. They have a Fred Meyer and Costco. Astoria has the main hospital in the region, but Seaside has a hospital too. Cannon Beach has their own police department and fire station as well. It is a safe area.

For a fun weekend, visit the Tillamook dairy plant in Tillamook which is south of Cannon Beach. They got ice cream, cheese, milk, and samples and stuff. Gift shop, and you can buy their goods. They are good goods.

Vibe: Touristy, beach cottage rental...upscale artsykind of vibe.no logging or fishing stuff around there.Pretty boring in the winter.about 90 minuts give or take a few to drive to Portland...Seaside is another touristy...but bigger...town than CB a few minutes north. Touristy but more of a "real" town.
Astoria is about 30-40ty mins north of CB and is a bigger "real" town.

I can answer some of it...

* It'll take 90 minutes to get from Cannon Beach to downtown PDX, traffic permitting (and nearly all of it along Hwy 26).

Cannon Beach and (nearby) Seaside are almost all about tourism. You start seeing other industries pop up either at around Garibaldi and Tillamook to the south (commercial fishing, timber, USCG, farming/ranching), or Astoria to the north (commercial maritime, USCG, and some timber I think).

The vibe is all about maritime in Astoria, and beach-centric from around Gearhart down to Tillamook, where things become rural.

Congrats on getting a job in Cannon Beach, but I fear that for housing you're going to either have to rent a small space in town, or start looking in Seaside for a place to rent (Seaside is only about 20-30 minutes' drive north along 101).

As far as places to visit? There are roughly a billion of them Best bet is to take a spare day and start driving up and down 101 to start sniffing around.

Another big help. Thanks for all the friendly, helpful responses so far. I'm very familiar with the towns further south between Brookings and Florence but not so with those further north.
Fortunately, my job (at a conference center) has dorms, so I don't have to worry about housing.
I like the low key atmosphere, somewhere calm and peaceful. Walkability is a huge plus becuase I love walking everywhere. More fun than a gym, IMHO.

Can anyone recomend any good hiking trails in the area? Or the cheese factory tours? I visited Fort Clatsop a long time ago, and would recomend it to anyone.

There are two of 'em (cheese factory tours) in Tillamook: The Tillamook Cheese Factory, and the Blue Heron Cheese Factory - they're both almost next door to each other on the East side of Hwy 101, just north of Tillamook. Blue Heron has a bunch of activities for the kids and such, and Tillamook has a lot of shopping on-site.

As for hiking trails? My favorite in the area is a bit south of CB at Hug Point, but there are quite a few to choose from. This should give you an idea of where to start... Cannon Beach Trails Topo Maps | Topographic Map Data for Cannon Beach Trails State | Trails

To find even more places to hike, there is a website: Hiking Trails, Mountain Bike Trails & Trail Maps | Trails.com that give you a free 14 day trial, but the quality of some of the trails is excellent. Directions, topographical info, etc. and you can print out a bunch of them.

Canon Beach is a great place to have as a "home base." Another great place to hike is in Manzanita, which is a few miles south of Canon. There, you can park on either side of hwy 101 (at designated lots, not on the shoulder) and access the beach, (there's even a walkway UNDER 101 to access the beach).

This website has a huge list of information up and down the entire Oregon Coast.
Oregon Coast Camping Guide - The Complete List

This should keep you busy for awhile!!
As far as enjoying the coast in winter months. Sometimes it is the most beautiful with the huge waves, whale watching, and keeping cozy while watching the sea.
