Looking at a rental near SE Flavel & 87th. Looked at the PD crime stats & such but can't really get a good feel of what the area is like. Can't even really tell what the neighborhood/area is called, besides the broad "SE" label. Thoughts, opinions, ideas?

I think it's considered in the Lents neighborhood.

It's not the greatest area, but probably not the worst. Portlandmaps.com shows the crime statistics for the area. You can see its a lot of vandalism, car breakins, etc.

Enrico is right, it's definitely in Lents. The area is not too bad. It'd definitely more blue collar neighborhood, with a good bit of diversity. You have good access to both the MAX and 205 though (as well as the Springwater path and 205 path). Also pretty close to the Powell Butte Park, which is a good hidden gem in Portland, as most in the city won't venture that far SE to get to it.

There is a pretty big park a few blocks north (heading towards Duke). If you're thinking of a trendy, Portlandia Portland neighborhood, Lents is not it. That said, there is affordable housing there, and some amenities. 82nd does seem to a be a little of a dividing line though, and East of it is definitely a bit nicer in my opinion. I would also say the further South you go gets a little less nice. ie.: Woodstock>Duke>Flavel. There is a decent corridor of shops/restaurants the further north on 92nd you go.

I live a neighborhood over in Brentwood Darlington, and I really don't think it's very dangerous our crime ridden. Maybe more so than Laurelhurst, but the bad rep. this area of Portland got 10-15 years ago is not really true anymore.
