I'm planning to be up there a minimum of 3 months and look for work. Where I come from there's a lot of ethnic mix so that's important to me. (particularly area where there is Native Americans).
I hear that east Portland, southeast Portland is kind of a shady area but probably most affordable? The ideal would be near the arts district downtown but figure that will cost a lot of money? Just need a room, studio for the first few months then will look for another place if I settle and bring my wife and cats up.

There aren't ethnic enclaves in Portland. Tribal common groups you will find include Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs (Warm Springs, Wasco, and Northern Paiute), the Klamath (which includes Modoc), and tribes (bands) that populated the coast that belong to the Salish culture/linguistic group. As you may know the tribe determines who its members are. Many members who have intermarried with European descendants cannot be visually identified.

If you are a member of a Tribe I would contact your Chairman and ask for contact information for friends in the area. Alternately you could seek out gatherings (sometimes called pow-wow) for tribal groups you wish to contact. These gatherings are their parties, obtain an invitation from the host group.
