Another myth about Portland is that it has less crime than most cities. Portland actually has higher than average crime. Violent crime is 1.36 times the national average and property crime is 1.76 times the national average. Also there were 301 rapes, 1,367 robberies, and 2,732 aggravated assaults in 2003 in Portland.

aawest...quoting 2003 facts?? Thats kinda a stretch isnt it?...
I have to agree on the property crime part though, but the actual "city" of Portland is small, so it askews the ratio a little of per capita.
After growing up in NYC, I always thought Portland to ba a walk in the park.....

I thought you were heading to Texas? ...just kidding......

The latest figures they have are for 2005 which is just as bad as 2003. There were 325 rapes, 1,137 robberies, and 439 assaults in 2005 (source: city-data).

Yeah and if you look at 2006, it's half that. So either the stats were off, things have dramatically changed or...But yeah, even posting 2005 stats is kind of a stretch. We know you don't like it here--you've made that clear.

The statsitics are not off. If you check the city-data.com statisitics under crime it shows statistics for 7 years and they are consistent from year to year.

What about where you come from? I dont know thw exact town, but two major cities in Central Florida dont fare well either (Gainsville, Orlando) per capita....that is the key here.
Where are you moving in Texas? may we analyze these statistics for that city?....Just some perspective. Im not discounting what you are saying, those may be accurate statistics....But Portland is a big "metro" area in the national average, and I would expect it to not be Mayberry. Statistics do not tell the complete story of a city. Barry Bonds just broke the homerun record..statistically...but is he better the hammering hank? (No offence to Giants fans)

I checked in to it as well and I see what you mean about consistency. It only goes to show that minorities are not the only one's who commit such crimes. Portland is predominantly white. I've noticed one constant with caucasian children living in any suburb in the U.S (Most are hungry for action/excitement) and want to be free from the dead feel of the suburbs. Personally, I see Portland as a small suburb rather than a city. Certainly no NY, LA or Chicago. Not even Philadelphia or Seattle....

Crime is an equal oppotunity employer....no doubt!

Portland is far from big, but it does have alot of suburb sprawl.....

I know and you can't compare the statistics from Rockwood or Lents with other parts of Portland! Most of these stats are probably from east of SE 82nd (i.e. felony flats) or parts of the actual core area of downtown. I also wonder if these are for the entire COUNTY, which includes other cities? I haven't looked myself.

You have crime in any city or suburb. There is no safe haven in this world. You could be living amongst movie stars and still hear people being shot, raped or murdered. It's just a fact of life. You can't count on the police to help you, all you can do is use your intuition. Most importantly...Watch how you carry yourself, never ever project fear! As hard as it may be you can do it. All you need to do is practice. Look in the mirror and watch your facial expressions, seriously it may save your life one day.
