Or the surrounding city area? From Google Earth, there seems to be a big hill to the south of the town, which I would think blocks out the view.

You are correct. The down-town area of Hood River is along the Columbia River which has carved a gorge over the millenia. I am not sure of the line of sight at the top of the bluff, it has been years since I visited. I do remember wonderful views of Mt. Hood from around Dee or Parkdale.

The view from Lost Lake is postcard quality.

Generally, people cross into Washington for views of Mt. Hood from the Hood River area.

You can from Indian Creek Golf Course. We used to go for an OK lunch at Divots with great views.

Drive along the Hood River Fruit Loop Tour and you'll see it plenty.

Nell is correct. Downtown, the view is blocked by the Gorge walls. That "big hill" you are referring to is actually the side of the Gorge & it extends for quite a distance (40 miles?) in either direction. You have to get above the walls before Mt. Hood comes into view. The drive south from HR along OR 35 is absolutely stunning on a clear day. And if you have a clear day to do it in the Spring (blossoms) or Summer (fruit season), it's an extra special treat.

Once you are down in the Oregon side of the Gorge, I don't believe there is any spot that you can see any mountains above the gorge walls, all the way from Troutdale to The Dalles. Not sure about the WA (WA 14) side, though - I haven't driven that east of Camas, but I think it does go up a bit higher at stages, so you might have views from it.

I have some pictures I took of a lovely view of Mt. Hood along the WA-14 where it meets the 141 near White Salmon, so you can see it from there.
