There's a Waldorf school close to downtown that you might look into - it includes up to Grade 8, so your 11-year-old still qualifies for a few years.

If you're willing to live out in Beaverton or Hillsboro, you should be able to find a small 3-bedroom house in a safe neighborhood in your price range. (I own such a house in such a neighborhhod.) The MAX line is easily accessible. Diversity is relative, but there are plenty of non-whites here, although I'm sure it's not high if taken purely as a percentage of the population. Being gay really isn't an issue in most of the Portland area. I moved here from the South, and "lack of diversity" here is different from "lack of diversity" in the South and probably other areas. Even if you're surrounded by mostly white folks, there isn't the same pressure to conform to a homogeneous set of social norms, and people don't ask you which Christian church you go to when they first meet you.

That is exactly what I meant. I guess I should have rephrased and said "acceptance of things non-Christian". Just curious, where in the South did you move from?

@Rob Allen - thanks so much! I will check it out. I found a website that seems like it will be helpful called greatschools.com.

Default Some negatives

A little reality here....everything everyone says is true BUT lots of homeless people everywhere. EVERYWHERE. Lots of cigarette smokers everywhere, can feel crowded/congested with exhaust fumes in the air, not anywhere even close to the arts in Dallas. Not even close. Dallas is cleaner with more open spaces and much better economyli.

So you move to Dallas, then.

But you're right. In the middle of a festival, or some event, it can feel crowded. Ever taken MAX after a Blazer game? Now that's crowded.

Yes, if you kneel along the curb next to a traffic light, you're likely to get a whiff of exhaust fumes.

And sure, if you're in an area where there are services for the homeless, you'll find a bunch.

Name me another city where you won't. Is it common, no. Is it EVERYWHERE. Of course not. Wild statements like that are liable to make no one believe anything you do post.
