Chart House is pricey but the food is outstanding and the view is beautiful.

I went to Chart House a couple of months ago. Maybe because everyone is always saying how outstanding the food is and my expectations were high but I didn't find it to be exceptional. It was good but it wasn't worth what they charge.

In my opinion, Chart House, Salty's and Newport Grill are all in the area of mediocre food. The views do make up for that some what, but there are a lot more option in Portland for a memorable dining experience.

If you're going to be spending that much money in the first place you should go to some place like Andina or Portland City Grill (top of "Big Pink," can't get a better view then that!) Or go a notch up price wise and go to Ringside, I haven't been there since the remodel and the menu revamp but it's supposed to be phenomenal now.

If you want to save cash just drive down East Burnside between 12th and 39th and just randomly pick a place. Or along Alberta between MLK and 33rd. They're all good, and the long lines out the doors during dinner time even on a weeknight proves that. I have not had a bad meal on either of those streets in years now.

I can also highly suggest Pambiche on Glisan as the best Cuban restaurant I've ever been too, even including Miami. In the next block is Dove Vivi Pizza, one of the most unique pizza places in Portland and well worth the frequent 20 minute wait just for a single slice.

You can also hit up one of the multitude of Food Carts.

Thanks so much, these are great suggestions, hamellr. Maybe Portland City Grill might fit the bill.

I thought the food at Portland City Grill was pretty bad, but what a view! I would think happy hour might be a better choice there.

They had a chef change over about a year ago, the food should be better now.

But Happy Hour is highly recommended.

OK I think we might be going to Andina, because there is live music.

Andina is amazing. We had a wonderful anniversary dinner there. Outstanding food and superb service. It might not be the best choice for timid/unadventurous eaters, though.

Hmm... was just looking at the menu. To me it looks delicious, but maybe they can make something more "plain" for my relatives, who were worried about spiciness! lol Still, I have heard really good things about this restaurant and it would be nice to see some live musicians. It looks like it might be a tossup between the food and the view!

ETA: We ended up at Ringside Fish House because Andina and Southpark Square looked too exotic for them. We had a good meal, but the service was pretty spacy!
