Default Food/Restaurants in Portland

I recently went to Cannon Beach and had the most delicious meal there (I cannot remember the name of the restaurant). The bread, the entree, and coffee (in fact I asked for their brand of coffee) was extraordinary. Are there restaurants in Portland that you can recommend, not by popularity, but by truly well made, delicious food? It doesn't matter to me what ethnic origin they are - anything from American, to Thai. Thanks in advance.

Wow, there are so many! I like Old Wives Tale on Burnside and Than Thao in Hawthorne District. Also, if you are into health foods, really enjoyed the deli in Whole Foods. When I was there a few weeks ago, a group of us went to a cute little place on Belmont called Tao of Tea. They have organic food, we just got tea and dessert--highly recommend!

okay some quick thoughts on restaurants in P-town....Some high end, low end, no end...
Some ethnic, some fun places and some less then pretty to look at, but have great chefs.

I no longer live in P-town, but worked in Restaurants there for years...here are some of my favs and why..

Alba in Hillsdale, by far the best N. Italian restaurant, plus wont break your bank. Others would be. Pazzo, Fratellis and Genoa...each for different reasons. And with out a doubt Apizza Scholls or Escape from NY for pizza....just my opinions.

Best Chef driven restaurants...
Higgins
Bluehour
23 Hoyt
Le Pigeon
Fenouil
Lauro
Paleys Place
Wildwood

Okay there a plenty more, but these ones I have been to, so I wont speak of others
Tabla does good and though i have not been Im sure the new place Sel Gris will be good, purely because of who is leading the kitchen. These places may be spendy, but just go for appetizers, these chefs are some of the best at apps!!

others...and still good chefs...
Haydens Lakefront (big family fun)
Paragon
Oba
Fife
T

Okay some funky spots that I like...research at your own risk
Muu Muu's
El Grillo
Swagats
Marathon
Michaels Italian Beef
Montage
Saigon Kitchen

So many others...So many great spots in Portland, it truly is a foodie city..
This list is in no way indictive of anything...just ramble from a food guy on the other side of the world.

Bon Appetit
