I've never been to the coast before and we have one full free day to experience it. Staying in Beaverton and renting a car, what is the best way to maximize the 8-9 hours we would have? Are there any must-see things? I'm more than willing to do some hiking and like tourist attractions. Museums and such are not as interesting to me as being able to take in the beauty of the coast. Any suggestions?

My family and I are also planning a "coast day" on our next trip to Portland. I can tell you how we will spend it if that helps

First we will take the 30 from Portland to Astoria, where we will climb to the top of the Astoria Column and visit Fort Clatstop. We will also simply just drive around a bit to see the sights and enjoy the feel of the town.

Next we will head down the 101 on to Seaside where we plan to stop for lunch followed by a walk around town and down by the water.

Then we head further south to explore Ecola State Park and Indian beach Finally we will hit Cannon Beach to see Haystack Rock and let the kids play in the sand before getting some Ice Cream in town. When we are finished we will take the 26 back into Beaverton/Portland.

I know there is so much more to do and see in these towns and further south, but our time will be limited. Hope this helps some

You can make a day trip to any of these towns:

Long Beach, Washington (Cape Disappointment, Marsh's Free Musuem, Kite shops.)

Astoria (Astoria Column, http://www.1nova.com/photoblog/2011/...-memorial-day/, Fort Clatsop, Fort Columbia (across the river,) Fort George, Lewis and Clark's Dismal Nitch, water front)

Seaside (The Beach! Aquarium, the Arcade, Shopping at the Factory Stores, Shopping downtown.)

Canon Beach (The Beach! Shopping, eating)

Tillamook (Cheese Factory, Beef Jerky Factory, Blue Heron Cheese, Oceanside, History Museum, Air Museum,)

Lincoln City (Casino, Beaches, D River, dining, Antique Stores, Sea Lions off Taft Pier.)

Depoe Bay (watching boats come in or leave the bay, watching storms, whale watching, taffy!)

Newport (Ripley's/Wax Works/Aquarium, Hatfield Science Center, Yaquina Bay Bridge, both light houses, Agate Beach, Nye Beach, Waterfront shopping, Newport Bay Aquarium, South Beach.)

I usually go to Astoria and come back via Seaside, or go to Newport and come back via Lincoln City.

If you're leaving from Beaverton, I'd just head out 26 to Seaside. I love Astoria, so I'd probably head up there. In addition to the above listed things I'd add Fort Stevens and the Wreck of the Peter Iredell, at Warrenton.

In Seaside, add tidepooling in the south cove. And taffy.

Head south down the coast through Cannon Beach and to Tillamook. The coastline between is just too awesome to miss. And then head back to 26, and home.

tillamook area is nice. we spent last weekend checking out the cheese factory and stayed at rockaway beach.

seaside is fun for their taffy and little touristy shops and boardwalk-y feel. I have heard great things about astoria, but haven't been yet.

you could drive to tillamook and work your way up the coast and come back on the 26.

The Sunset Highway, or Highway 26 Not "the 26."

Lol. It's a sure sign of a transplant when they put "the" in front of a Highway number.

Nah. The interstates are referred to as freeways. The state highways are just that. Just drop the "The" before I-5. Oh, and we put the "I" on it. Locals don't call it "The 5" like they do in California.

I wonder what they do in Washington? I don't think I know, definitively.
