Indeed. It's of course valuable for everyone to share their experience and views. The problem starts with absolute statements such as this is how it is, this is the only option, this is the only hope the OP has, or the OP should just give up now. Not one person on this thread has seen the OP's resume or interviewed him so can one truly say what his possibilities are? Even if the general options aren't great, who is to say that for him particularly with his unique contacts he won't find what works for him.

i thought this might be encouraging to some:

8 Cities with Surprising Job Growth - Kiplinger

Portland, OR

Metro area population:
2.2 million

Current unemployment rate: 7.8%

Job growth next five years: 12%

Number of new jobs: 130,000

After devastating job losses in the recession, Portland has made a spectacular recovery, fueled by the tech mini-boom and the area's attractiveness to young people. Anchored by Intel and its 16,000 employees, Portland will maintain its moniker as the Silicon Forest for its more than 1,200 high-tech firms, most of them small to medium-size.

High tech will continue to be the fastest-growing sector, but other major job gains will come in sportswear. The presence of Nike, Adidas and Columbia Sportswear has spawned many smaller sportswear-related firms that are hiring designers, marketers and salespeople. The industry has also given rise to a vibrant graphic design sector. Portland, the third-largest seaport on the West Coast, will also continue to grow as a major transportation and shipping center.

Columbia left downtown. Their HQ is now just north of Highway 26 off of Murray, over next to the Home Depot and Sunset High School. They're walking distance from Nike's HQ.

no, actually i just didn't want to get attacked for posting anything that might seem too optimistic.

... but that obviously didn't work.

I'll try not to laugh again. But being attacked for something "too optimistic"? That kinda establishes the environment doesn't it. OH NO, please no optimism, we're Portlanders! You ever hear of that show called "No sex, please, we're British". Portland could have a comedy called "No optimism, please, this is Portland!" Are there any cabarets there to do it?

Adidas is hiring sales people right now. I have a friend who applied there a couple of weeks ago. She said there were many, many other applicants but at least it's an opportunity.
